When Croatia joins the EU it will not be allowed to subsidise Croatian Airlines. If the western bankers raise the cost of borrowing, then they can force Croatian Airlines into bankruptcy. I am not predicting this outcome, but it is the sort of thing your new "friends" in the west do all the time.

JAT is being rundown by the DOS crooks. My guess is that something similar went on in Hungary

Yes, the E.U. bureaucrats with MBA degrees from America know the best how to run airlines and railroads. Some stupid, backwards people from the past like Emperor Qi Shi Huang-ti, King Solomon of Jews and King Chosroes of Persians firmly did believe, you can't make money on the health care, transportation, education. But these retards did not had any MBA degree from America and did not work in Brussels - so they made it into legends about "golden age" and into Bible. I guess, the Brussels bureaucrats won't made that.

The way these old stupid bastards did think:

- you can make money by transporting kettle, but not humans. Cattle is cattle, humans (even slaves at that time) usually complain loudly and everyone has own idea how they want to travel or get transported. You just can't incorporate every wish into your policy and still be profitable. So the idea: make people contribute a little or even nothing to the transport / education / health care and the state has to have some money aside to fund the rest.

- if you travel, you already know, how much you will spend TOTAL. If the ticket is cheap, you buy souvenirs and visit restaurants and buy some stuff you can afford and take it home. Like I do it all over East / Central Europe or Asia. If the ticket is expensive, than I bring the food from home, sit down somewhere in the park and eat the sandwich from home. No souvenir, no restaurant. The result in Dollar is the same but the fun is not. @Lenard: this is why we like the Eufrazijeva bazilika more, than the catedrals in Poitiers ;)
That I can even largely understand the guide or people in the city and don't need English translation is a neat bonus.

Michael Thomas don't worry modern new Croatian airplanes of Croatia Airline will take up the challenge [link] . It is already the No #1 Airline of former Yugo and expanding. Yore rite about JAT even though Serbia stole as usual all the aircraft of all the former Yugo republics. Has run the air craft in to the ground now they are old coming to the end of their flying life can't even find a buyer for JAT aka Serb airline.

Lenard, all you need is few Hungarian managers with American MBA, some E.U. involvement and good old Hungarian back-stabbing. That is enough to take down any airline, even Singapore or Lufthansa. I feel, you and JAT are certainly not without the risk.

-------

Hungarians are mad to allow this.

Malev staff are highly skilled and well-paid and they make a significant contribution to the local economy. With Malev gone, Hungary will have to rely on cheap no-frills airlines to connect them with the world.

If EasyJet etc can't make a profit by running a particular route (say London-Budapest) then those links will be completely cut.

Hungary has strategic and financial links with many countries and it is vital that airlines fly to those countries.

JAT must not follow Malev, but I fear it will.

JAT is in completely different shoes, as long as Serbia is not in E.U. MALÉV fail is to a pretty large degree due a fine from Brussels which supposed to fine the company because the State put there extra money. True to the worst Hungarian back-stabbing tradition it was the CEO of Travel Service, an ex-MALÉV employee who reported MALÉV to Brussels. Travel Service owns a no-frills airline called "SmartWings", given their reputation it is a very smart idea not to fly with them under any circumstances.

Because of the fine it became a direct interest of Hungarian government to finish the airline ASAP. And true to classic Hungarian back-stabbing tratidion they encouraged people to buy MALÉV tickets even few hours before shutting down the company artificially. There is much more there, every single chapter being about back-stabbing and betraying the country. A while ago criminals were hanged for that but now it's OK I guess.

---

This is the chance for JAT to buy some newer airplanes at the upcoming auction for Malev!

MALÉV does not have a SINGLE airplane, all are leased. All are gone already and stationed in Ireland. This is not the time when it USED to have own airplanes.
