Serbia will not become a candidate for EU membership if Belgrade fails to, by the end of next week, reach an agreement with Priština on Kosovo's representation.

"You are right the people in Serbia do not need to have access to western healthcare like you do, nor their children do not need to attend modern school systems like yours do, nor do they need the economic opportunities that you do."

So Pss, tell us how has becoming a EU member helped Romania in all this?
Not that Romania is the only one who has not benefited but it will do for starters.

pss, people in Kosovo live in worse conditions than in central Serbia, yet KAlb "politicians" don't want to negotiate complomise solution with Serbia, your politicians only think about their pride, they don't think about healthcare, modern school systems, economic opportunities for their people... What's your attitude to it?

How kind of you to care about Serbian people well-being much more than about KAlbs well-being.
(aaayyy, 8 February 2012 21:36)
In what possible way are you saying any compromise with Serbia would be a boost for Kosovo? All that would be accomplished is that foreign money flowing into Pristina would be redirected through Belgrade to be siphoned off first. Remember this mess was caused by the fact that Belgrade destroyed all the infrastructure in Kosovo in order to drive the Albanians out.
Comparing Serbia's joining the EU with Kosovo joining Serbia is insane!

Serbia is a partially recognized territory recognized by five (5) insolvent EU members.
Kosovo is a partially recognized territory recognized by twenty-two (22) solvent EU members.

Common sense and logic dictates that Kosovo is in a much better shape than Serbia. Symmetry must be preserved or tit-for-tat diplomacy will be ensued by Pristina.

Seems like Serbia is continuing with their downward spiral. Where are the barricades? What happened to returning back to the way things were before ROSU went to the border? For months we heard about how Serbia was going to stand "strong" and not give up? Serbia is running out of steam real fast. The barricades achieved nothing. Serbias stubborness to Europe has achieved nothing. And now we see Serbia breaking down completely. Now the "toughest" serbs like borko and bogdanovic are crying about how they will not achieve candidate status. And where id the referendum?
Give up Serbia now while you still have a grqm of dignity. The longer this scharade goes on the more you make your country look rediculous. In the end you WILL join the EU and recognize Kosova in one way shape or form.

Seems like only a few months ago, I was saying that it was no skin off Serbia's nose if there was no progress in Kosovo-Serbian relations. Kosovo would continue to hang in limbo while Serbia moved forward(visa liberalization, SAA, fast track to EU ascension) which was what Serbia actually wanted to keep Kosovo in limbo since they knew they could never "own" it again. It is a shame the international community, more specific the EU allows that.------I guess they listened!

Hoo hoo, lets hope to see each other in December, EU - and then maybe the following December, or until you are totally a defunct Union. It will probably happen sooner, judging from the financial news I read daily, and analysts predictions, but keep sounding tough, EU, and keep trying to bully Tadic and the DS - but I have a feeling the next time around, Brussels, you will be a bit more humble. Nothing like having your financial balls cut off, to make one a bit more "understanding". Wonder if Pristina will understand the same message? But, they never had balls to do something on their own anyway. From the time of the League of Prizren, the Albanians have tried to get someone to do their bidding for them - they failed then, and I think their days are numbered now too.

You are asking too much, both Kosova and EU. This is Tadic public policy. I hope that this is only for electoral purposes, because If Tadic really believe this, Serbia will lose both of those (or better EU,cause Kosova is gone “defacto e dejure”). If I was a Serbian politician I would blame Milosevic for the loose of Kosova(and this is the truth) and I would see forward for EU integration. Serbia is in the middle of EU, not Russia or China.

Please God, molim Boze, let the Serbian candidacy for EU membership be in question. The EU is a failing, decaying, miserable Union, that will die of its own greed soon. This Union is a relic, by most Western economic commentators. Unfortunately, the DS has no alternative at this time, but to keep promoting the EU status policy, even though all serb citizens know this is a farce. Mr. Tadic, I know you have no choice here, but it would be so nice to have a leader of Serbia, a true leader of Serbia, say f-off, all that do not respect Serbia. You will never do that, because you have been instructed to do otherwise. I only pray and hope, for the next true Serbian leader, one that will honestly represent Serbia's best interests. Shit, I'll do it. I could do no worse than the DS Tadic party.

Actually, for 22 EU member countries (the ones who wield power because they are supporting the other EU countries), as well as the United States and many of the other most powerful countries in the world, Serbia and Kosovo have the same status (since recognition of a country is a sovereign act by another country and they have all recognized Kosovo). However, while they might have the same status, they are not viewed the same, since Serbia is a developed country (already pretty advanced) that seems to be heading back into the past, and Kosovo is a developing country (not so advanced) that is eager to move into the future and welcomes all help.

This doesn't make sense. The Germans are saying Serbia must reach an agreement. They have proposed a solution so it's actually up to Prishtina to make a move. So, they need to speak the truth. What Germany really wants is that Serbia accepts whatever Prishtina wants. Serbia should stick to its demands, which is respecting its sovereign rights. However, something tells me that Tadic will bend; he's weak.

Is this really surprise? Serbia tries everything to persuade his allies not to allow Kosovo to join the UN. On the other hand, Kosovo tries the same, using his allies to block Serbia's accession to the EU.

Tit-for-tat diplomacy, and a very understandable one. Besides that the growing EU expansion scepsism which is especially strong when it comes to "importing problems". Even the last one in Serbia should have noticed by now that this won't we be accepted.

Bob

EU politicians are mixing up something good and something bad in a way that will lead to deep resentments.

They could do better.

If Serbia wants to join the EU, it should be welcomed with open arms, not blackmailed into a grubby little corner.

Getting EU status as a result of complying with an invasion would be a bit of dirt that would stick on every Serb's throat forever.

Giving up any aspect of Kosovo is not a decent price for Serbia to have to pay as a condition for entry to the EU.

It should be kept as a separate issue.

What is the problem? Kosovo can be represented as an autonomous entity under 1244.

That is the defacto status and it has legal standing.

It is Kosovo and Germany that is the problem, not Serbia and not 1244.

Germany is trying to complete the NATO invasion of Serbian territory using the EU as a tool, and that must not be allowed to succeed.

The EU deserves better.

The problem is not Serbia, who wishes to defend her territory, but Pristina that should be run as an autonomous entity under 1244 and not play silly games with trying to be an un-selfsustaining udi.

Serbia must stand firm on this one, even at the expense of having to wait longer for the EU to get the message.

Last summer Merkel humiliated Tadic's good efforts to-date quite openly.

I admired Tadic's fortitude in the face of such diplomatic rudeness.

He owes her nothing after the way she behaved towards him.

Tadic has already been clear on his policy - he must not change.

Let's see how the belgradian clowns spin this one out. Kosovo will be represented on all international conferences and meetings in a symmetrical matter. If that entails having its state symbols and emblems present then so be it.

Maybe the serb camp here can come parrot some more about serbia being a un member....maybe you can use your un membership to tell Germany who is boss. HA!

From the time of the League of Prizren, the Albanians have tried to get someone to do their bidding for them - they failed then, and I think their days are numbered now too.

winston

The issue surrounding the status of Kosovo will never be resolved simply because Serbia will never give up on Kosovo and the Kosovo Albanians will never live under the rule of Serbia. All talks are up a dead-end street. The EU knows this so what are we all wasting our time for?

I did not now I was in such esteemed company. Since you speak for the majority of Serbs, you should counter this absurd EU candidancy bid by collecting signatures for a referendum on joing Russia. Common sense and logic dictates that Kosovo is in a much better shape than Serbia. Symmetry must be preserved or tit-for-tat diplomacy will be ensued by Pristina.

Start by executing the agreements which have been agreed upon since Dec, beginning with freedom of movement (Kosovo license plates), freedom of trade, and the IBM (integrated border management).

You are right the people in Serbia do not need to have access to western healthcare like you do, nor their children do not need to attend modern school systems like yours do, nor do they need the economic opportunities that you do. After all I am sure you and your family could survive on 300 euros a month without any problems at all. So why should the world force these people to endure the daily opportunities and amenities that you have.
It always amazes me the Serbian diasporia, they retain the Serbian pride and feelings of genetic superiority but somewhere they lose the compassion for the lives that were left behind. Let them live in squalor so I can be proud.
Or is it that when you return for visits your status will not be so enhanced in their eyes if they have the same opportunities and economic freedom you do?

Russia is providing Serbia with big fat gas discounts and will modernized Serbia's gas pipeline infrastructure, China is always on the look out for good business opportunities, going in to Africa when the west and the other great white hopes refused to go because it was considered risky.
