As for some of you, guys, who couldn't wait for a chance to generalize and say something bad about Serbia in general, consider this.

Even those sentences still amount to 6 to 17.5 years.
That's what happens when Partizan fans attack foreigner in Belgrade. But what happens when Partizan fans are attacked in another country?

In August 2010 Partizan defeated Anderlecht in Belgium and qualified for group stage of UEFA Champions League.

This is what B92 wrote, if you are interested.

http://www.b92.net/eng/news/society-article.php?yyyy=2010&mm=08&dd=25&nav_id=69272

But, there was an incident before the game...

http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=sr&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pressonline.co.rs%2Fsr%2Fsport%2Ffudbal%2Fstory%2F130814%2FTrojica%2B%25E2%2580%259EGrobara%2522%2Bpretu%25C4%258Dena%2Bu%2BBriselu%2C%2Bjedan%2Bse%2Bbori%2Bza%2B%25C5%25BEivot.html

"...Partizan supporters three were seriously injured!"

One had 17 stitches, one lost an eye, and third one ended up with brain damage.

"An eyewitness of events told BETA that the Partizan fans walked Brussels before the game, when they were attacked by a large group of people who started beating them. A man who attended the event said that several police officers watched the fight and did not interfere..."

Did police do something afterwards?

"...representatives of the Belgian police and was told that no one has been arrested. The attackers reportedly fled after the incident."

Our press was rightfully upset about Brice Taton's murder, and wrote about it for a long time.
Belgium press didn't give it a mention.
The only one who did mention this incident was "Islam in Europe" blog

http://islamineurope.blogspot.com/2010/08/brussels-serbs-vs-muslims.html

Contrary to other eyewitnesses "Islam in Europe" claims that Serbs just got what they deserved.

" In fights before and after the Anderlecht - Partizan Belgrade Champions League qualifications match, two fans of the Serbian champion were seriously injured ."

Hmmm...two?

"The fans challenged a group of immigrant youths next to the Brussels South stations. Two Serbians were badly injured. One of them is in intensive care at Saint Peter's Hospital and his life is in danger. According to the latest reports, he is brain-dead."

Yes. Two apparently...And they started it, by challenging group of immigrant youths.

"A gang of about 400 Serbs descended on Brussels Tuesday, and not only for the match. The Serbs were out to fight with Muslims."

Group of fans that was attacked was about 10 people, and according to eyewitnesses it was unprovoked.

"Islam in Europe" ends with "Besides the first victim, another man lost an eye and a third was injured in his face."

There was a third person (17 stitches) after all.

Nobody even mentioned this in Belgium or in Serbia.
So, I guess "jj" didn't get a chance to say that Belgium is the place "where hooligans rule and do as they please" , and Avni didn't get the chance to say (as he said many times before, no doubt) that Belgium "is the right place to commit crimes."

And it is in comparison.
Consider it.
In Serbia, even with reduced sentences they still get 6 to 17.5 years in jail, press writes about it, etc.
In Belgium, you attack someone and leave him brain-dead (just as good as dead), and what happened?
Police watches but does nothing, press is silent, all attackers (around 40 of them, escaped and were never found) received 0 years.
Hey, if I'm a perpetrator I would rather get away with 0 years then 6 or 17 years...

But, I'm telling you about it so I expect Ben to come forward and say that Belgium is "sick society" and such thing...

One sentence was really something...

"A bunch of hooligans that attack a single man to show the world how tough they are. "

So typically Serbian?
For a moment I though that you are talking about NATO and Serbia or NATO and Libya or something like that, but never mind that now....

First, hooliganism is not Serbian problem alone. In fact, in the beginning it was referred to as "British disease", as this was where it originated.

I agree with bganon that there is no political will to tackle the problem in Serbia. In that light I disagree with reduced sentences, as it will send the wrong message.
First, sentences were too harsh to begin with, because for similar crimes in EU countries fans will get 7.4 years in jail (according to statistics).
In this case they received from 12 to 35 years in prison. Such harsh sentencing was, in my opinion, politically motivated, to leave impression that Serbian government is willing to tackle the problem. Now they are reducing the punishment, leaving impression that they are giving in to pressures.
This way they made another mistake.

Should be great for a Serbian Tourism brochure.
It was a black eye for Serbia when it happened but with the prosecution of the individuals showed a good response by the police and justice system. If this latest action sticks anyone would be a fool to visit Serbia, definitely not a place to bring your kids.

I sure hope the Serbian government compensates the victim's family for each year they fail to apprehend the two convicts who got away.

"Alcatraz fan group leader Prelić, Irriducibili fan group leaders Grković and Marković and Rebels group leader Puzigaća organized the attack on Taton."

so typical Serbian. A bunch of hooligans that attack a single man to show the world how tough they are.

And since Serbia is sick society product of which are these criminals they are now considered as "our tough boys that need to be helped" hence the sentence is reduced. Part of it was already carried the other part will be forgiven so for this summer they can be in Montenegro or Greece for holidays. Just in time.
EU should take note of this but they will leave Germans again alone to look bad and they would be the nice one to Serbia. What a justice you have neighbours...

Obviously a bad news couple of days.

Let nobody be under any illusions its no great surprise we get these bad news stories when one considers the lack of political will to tackle problems.

The message hooligans have received the past couple of days is this - its ok to attack other sports fans, because there will always be some who will offer at least limited support claiming 'provocation'. Its not such a bad thing to attack Croatian sports fans, because they attack us when we visit Croatia.'Hell if the boss of the Serbian police said this, they might even let us go if our attack doesn't get into the media!'

Finally if you beat any sports fans to death, don't worry too much as the sentence won't be more than a few years.

All countries have problems with their youth, much of it is to do with unemployment and social issues. However, each country chooses the way it reacts to these problems. Is Serbia's approach effective?

Reading all this makes my blood boil. Why reduce sentences? Lock 'em up and throw away the key. This was intentional murder. Horrible.
