I well aware of when the Republicans came into the picture. Regardless of what the parties were called pre 1850 they were all mirror images of the two we have today.

But if you want me to be correct then here it is “How many parties have won office in the last 160 years?????

Why don’t you try and get elected without the support of the two parties or for that matter try and get elected without money.

You would not know a democratic system unless TV told you so. All you have described in you post is how the two parties change people but you get more of the same crap. Look at Obama promising the world; so what happened? More of George Bush BS. Wake up.

Perhaps you can site an Albanian example of democracy since Serbia’s not to your taste.

And if you are a dissident from a country with a dictatorship like Serbia, for instance the widow or son of a persecuted politician, you get political asylum too, isn't that great?

220 years and who else has won office during that time in the US apart from Republicans and Democrats?
So why is Putin any less democratic than the Americans? The simple answer is that the western media says so and it’s repeated over and over by people who really have never taken the time to sit down think about what the word democracy means.
(sj, 25 January 2012 21:58

Pretending to know more than you do again, huh? The Republican party did not evolve until the 1850's and there have been 10 presidents not affiliated with either the Republican or Democratic parties.
The US system has evolved to a 2 party system, not that a third party cannot devolop such as Indpendents or the Green Party. But most people assimilate to the platforms of one of the 2. But still for office people vote for individuals and not parties, as opposed to some of the European markets where people vote for the party and then the party decides who takes the office.
In the US a President can only serve for 8 years or up to 10 years if he was VP and succeeds a President for less than 2 years. And there is no way to circumvent the system as Putin did by leaving office and having his picked pigeon take his spot and then come back. Similar tactics to Chavez in serving longer than their constitutions allow--usually a telltale sign of a dictator.
There is no perfect govt but the US has the best system I have seen. At least our elections are set and are not called at the whim of who is in office like in Serbia if Tadic does not want to leave office he just postpones the elections.

Putin didn't have to manipulate elections and suppress media - he would have been elected anyway, his rating was realy very high. Now his popularity is getting lower, but still he is popular enough and IMHO could even afford economizing on election manipulations :)

I didn't think he manipulated elections before, though he did use administrative resource as they put it, to influence the election outcome.

I never voted for him and was always curious why he was so popular, IMHO he didn't deserve it. Neither do I understand why he is losing his popularity now (I don't think protests would have been possible several years ago, when he was in his peak). Probably this is because of the crisis or because of his ptotege Medvedev is seen as rather weak. Mass mentality is very strange and unpredictable thing...

Is this your idea of a democracy?
(metrod, 25 January 2012 17:26)

No, I don't consider countries like Russia (or wannabe countries like Kosovo) where presidents/prime ministers stay in power through manipulated elections a democracy. But a dictatorship is something else, for example take Syria or North Korea where people who don't agree with the dictator are imprisoned or killed.

It is encouraging to hear Putin say this. Berk is right, all dictators like to claim that theirs is a free society. The USSR claimed true democracy, the Nazis proclaimed true socialism. Of course, neither one could be found in either one. Still, Putin says a little more, he says that dictatorship is no longer possible in the Russian Federation. That remains to be seen.

It is also worth pointing out that since the USSR collapsed, the Russians have been given no credit for their efforts to embrace either open society nor free markets. Europe and the West treats the Russian Federation like a public service, from the space program to their natural resources. If Russians have to crack down a little to hang on to what is theirs, and what belongs to their friends too, this is easy to understand.

If the Soviet Union had been treated like China is now, it would have become an economic power house that would have made the current People's Republic of China look like Vietnam. But at what price to Russians? The Russians suffered as much as anyone in the USSR, maybe more.

They are free now, whatever that means and, for them, the future looks good.

I am realy worried a little bit about Western style democracy for Russia. Is such democracy a way to destroy Russia? As we can see democracy brings nationalists to power in non-rich multiethnic non-emigrant countries where different ethnicities live within their traditional areas. ...and nationalists bring wars...

If YU had adopted democracy earlier, say in 50th-60th-70th, Balkan wars would have started earlier...

As far as I understand Bryan is a Serb who believes that Tadic isn't good enough at protecting Serbian interests in general and KSerb interests in particular, he dreams that someone like Putin (whom he consider strong and patriotic leader) will come to replace Tadic and do better job as a president. In the other words he wants a president like Putin for Serbia.

Where Putin is right now: at this moment Russia's billionaires will not benefit from some sort of "traditional" dictatorship. And since he represents their interests - there won't be any. Watching him cross himself during the X'mas Eve church service was hilarious, by the way (knowing his background).
