I am a Serb and I strongly disagree that the Croatian fans deserved this attack by singing provocative songs at the game. I watched the game and they sang their traditional supporter songs, without any provocations. Furthermore, this was not a fan fight, like you see at football matches, this is an attack on families returning from the game in their cars. When I say families there were woman and children in those cars, and I am deeply ashamed of my people for this and this is a dark time to callmyself a Serbian. This is not the type of image we need to be giving especially since we are the "hosts" of this tournament, and I would not blink an eye if we were kicked out, this is how angry I am at the police for not stopping this shamefull event from happening!

Anyone who saw the France-Croatia game in Novi Sad, can see that it was like a home game for Croatia. The stands were full of checkerboard shirts, and they even had the gall to sing offensive anti-Serb chants during the game.
(Dragan)

IMHO Police should have reacted somehow on nationalistic chants, instead of waiting for football hooligans to do it.

Why not ? Serbs are doing that everytime an negative newa atory including albanian pops up.

And about Novak Djokovic. If Kosova is his country then why don't he visit it's capital city Prishtina ?

Shameful! Whats more disturbing are the comments! Do two wrongs make a right? Have we returned to the pre-war propaganda? Yes! it is very awful that Serbs are attacked in Croatia whether it be a tourist or a fan watching a game. HOWEVER it is primitive and worrisome to attack fans returning from the game. Were these fans responsible for something that they deserved this? Axes? Stabbing? How can anyone justify this behavior. Where was the police? Usually there is an escort? It is also quite funny to hear..well they sang songs they were provocative. OMG are we in Kindergarten? Instead of going ahead Serbia is returning to the Middle Ages.

It's a shame to always see some people who try to defend crimes/attacks and relativize them instead of condemning them.

Do you go to a shop and feel free to steal things because some guy at the end of the street has stolen a car?

The serbian way of saying 'welcome to Serbia'. But this is not the first time foreigners are welcomed to Serbia with so much love.
(Demi, 25 January 2012 14:50)

Demi,
As Dragan commented, the stands were full of chequered shirts (Croats) and Novi Sad has a huge Croatian population. Novi Sad is hugely multicultural.

Serbs and Croats live together in Novi Sad every single day. Have you ever been?

Stop going around commenting on every single negative news story that includes Serbians. It's really boring that you do this. Don't you have your hands full covering Albanian crime, blood feuds and other related violence in Pristina & Tirana??

On a positive note, why don't you watch the Australian Open tennis and be witness to the mighty Novak Djokovic reclaim another Grand Slam title? Come on.. you are living in his country (Kosovo) the least you could do is show some support :)

There's been more attacks on Serbian athletes and fans in Croatia than attacks on Croats in Serbia. This type of incident is what Croatia's been doing for years. Croats ambush Serbian players in airports, call bomb threats to their hotel, have brutally attacked fans - and I believe they even killed a Macedonian fan whom they mistook as a Serb about 3 years ago.

I don't know why Kosova don't want to be a part of this peace loving country. They seemed such a friendly people orginazing 20-50 cars full of people to say goodbye to the croatian fans.

Anyone who saw the France-Croatia game in Novi Sad, can see that it was like a home game for Croatia. The stands were full of checkerboard shirts, and they even had the gall to sing offensive anti-Serb chants during the game. This would never be possible in Croatia, which just goes to show how tolerant Serbians are compared to their neighbours.
But never mind all that, Serbia is in the semis in waterpolo, Serbia is in the semis in handball, and Nole is in the semis in the Australian Open!! Good luck to all of them and keep up the great work!!
Cheers!!

Were their organs or kidneys extracted? Oh, no I forgot that only happens in southern Serbia! In all seriousness though, this is pretty shameful.

What about Serbs who are daily persecuted simply for being Serbian in the middle of occupied Serbia? Serbs in Kosovo do nothing wrong except for the fact that it pains Albanians that Serbs are brave enough to stay in Kosovo. Albanians want everyone to be cowards like they are :D

Funny that the Serbian police take this matter seriously, unlike their albanian counterparts in "kosovo." Where there response would be, "it was kids just playing."

Judging from the results both cases look pretty much the same.

"The police have so far arrested six persons and more arrests are planned since many more persons were involved in the attack."

I hope Serbian Police doesn't act like KPS in Kosovo where people demolishing cars (in case they are caught at all) are arrested and set free immediately. They should stay in prison until their court proceedings, and the person who stabbed the Croatian fan should be tried for attempted murder, in a severe case because it was done out of ethnic hate.

To paint all Serbs with the same brush is ridiculous.

But one thing is certain - the same idiots that did this are the same idiots who praise Seselj , and who rate Mladic as some form of hero.

I have no doubt that some of the posters on this site , who share these idiots ideas , actually believe these Croats somehow deserved being attacked. Watch how none of the internet warriors here who love Seselj and karadzic and Mladic wont condemn this action.

Their silence will be deafening , and their true colours will be seen.

Stupid thugs. This is a shame to Serbia and Serbs and does not represent majority of Serbians.

This is what I expect if Serbs go to Zadar or Split but we should not copy actions like this and house them in Serbia.

Shameful, cowardly and Neanderthal behaviour.

(gg, 25 January 2012, 11:58)

Not a direct consequence, but of course giving in to violence threads is an encouragement for hooligans/violent right wing extremists. Furthermore, they might think the state is tolerating their behavior.
