If enough EU member states request Berlin not to block Serbia’s EU candidate status, Germany will probably give up on its requests, daily Politika has learned.

The only reason Germany vetoed against Serbia becoming an EU candidate in December was that fact that a couple German KFOR soldiers were injured by violent Serbian protesters in Northern Kosovo.

The conditions for candidate status had been declared before a couple German KFOR soldiers were injured:
1) abolishment of Serbian institutions in Northern Kosovo
2) agreement for Prishtina representation at regional meetings under the legend "Republic of Kosovo"

Germany keeps insisting on these conditions now.

That is what Merkel 'said'.

Do you honestly believe this as a legitimate reason?

If a German is on my territory shooting tear gas and rubber bullets at me then you can be sure I would fire back.

What about catching Mladic & Karadzic as the only condition?

Germany could give any reason to block Serbia but it does not necessarily mean it is the real reason.

"The only possible reason for the Germans to ever want Serbia to join would have nothing to do with humanity or general friendly neighbourly relations, but something more along the lines of aligning their strategic business objectives purely for financial gain. "

Multiethnic countries such as Serbia, Bosnia, Turkey and some people almost see Kosovo as such have their specific problems, which EU doesn't need.

What is this hype all about anyway? Who cares about the EU? It appears that the Serbian people are "drunk" on this EU concept. There are no benefits to a bankrupt EU. Serbia will end up losing more than it will gain. Look east Serbia, that's where your future lies. Join those countries that respect your integrity as a nation, such as Russia, China, India, Brazil. Those are the leading economies. Abandon those that bombed you viciously and stole your territory. Revive yourself!! Soon President Nikolic and Vice president Kostunica will be in power. Forget the disintegrated EU!!!

Wishful Selfdeceptive thinking.

Germany is the Economical Engine in EU,
She has no Economival intests to let Serbia join.

Germany will ever bow to Mayority demands,
but the Mayority has to bow to Germany.

Arn Sweden,

I disagree. Germany may change their stance because they are almost on their own anyway, in terms of economic stability.

Germany is the biggest importer of Serbian exports.

The only possible reason for the Germans to ever want Serbia to join would have nothing to do with humanity or general friendly neighbourly relations, but something more along the lines of aligning their strategic business objectives purely for financial gain.

If economic traders in the EU are reducing trade with Germany and Serbia continue to produce & remain somewhat economically 'sound' or 'satisfactory' then perhaps allowing Serbia into the EU may be of benefit to Germany.

I however would not suggest Serbia join the EU but being a candidate is fine. Wait it out until it plays itself out and we see what is happening with the world in a years time.

Never trust the Germans.
