"the draft resolution urging approval of Serbia's EU candidate status in March"..."Almost all of the MEPs, who discussed a draft resolution that urges the European Council to grant Serbia the candidate status in March, supported the position."

Almost all? It seems to me that they can discuss granting every Serb a unicorn, a puppy and a pot of gold, but lets ask the pertinent question. How does Germany feel about it? Nothing else really matters. The level of bureaucracy involved in this body is amazing but it's power to do anything is small. Did I ask how Germany felt about this?

Serbia stands a much better chance than Turkey of joining the EU within a reasonable period of time.

Turkey is a much less European country in its outlook, whereas clearly Serbia belongs in the heart of Europe.

Those who look East are relatively few in number even if they are vociferous because of their nationalist ideas. Many Serbs travel to work in European countries. I would be surprised if anywhere near as many work in the East.

Candidate status is the correct step at this stage. It is futile to rubbish the future EU prospects for Serbia just on the basis of bigotry.

Why does Serbia want to join the EU? They'll have to stop beating up Gay people and letting violent skinhead thugs run amok all over their national capital. Their police department will actually have to prosecute persons for denying Gay people rights.

Why does EU blaim Serbia for barricads instead of stopping Thaci on his attempt to attack the North?

Probably because of EU politics - independent Kosovo without any demarcation lines (such as Ibar river) based on ethnic divisions. I don't think it will work as a long-term solution.

''This was expected - it is meant to trick Serbian voters so they vote for traitors thinking they are patriots.
(Ratko, 12 January 2012 17:44)''

Ratko, just who are the traitors? And what would be the definition of such?

Whoa.. who cares about "candidate status"???

Turkey was a candidate as of 1999.

It's stark that Austria & Germany can block any country that they don't want in the EU.

Until there is a power shift there is no way Serbia will enter the EU. Candidate status means NOTHING.

Keep it real people, Serbia won't join the EU for a long time and Kosovo is just an excuse for prolonging things; just look at Turkey.

Do not give away Kosovo at any cost. Germany/Austria will continue to make a fool of Serbia while ever they have significant power in the Union.

We can wait for the EU. Joining a Union that is in financial crisis cannot be beneficial. We continue to receive EU financial aid anyway so there is no major incentive to becoming a candidate anyway, seeing as the entry would be many years away (given status of candidate).
