If it is interesting for you I can tell in one word what feel and always felt towards our last leaders : Brezhnev – neutrality , Gorby – despise , Eltsyn – hatred , Putin – suspect Medvedev – compassion. So for me Putin differs very much from what you say. No comparison with Tadic whom I also feel compassion. He seems to be a good guy but only not our SOB while Putin is no doubt our SOB. I also consider him to be the best Russian leader after Brezhnev. He has done a lot to stop the degradation process but now I would like him to go. I was going to join the folks on Bolotnaia Square but I hate the organizers much more than the current elites. I never voted for any of the post-Soviet leaders of Russia.
Until recent I backed for the Communists but now they too became a part of this system and I got concentrated on my business. You must know that liberals and democrats are synonymous of CIA agents in this country. This ideology is the best to help you rob any country and Putin is the leader of the liberals here. When he came to power there were only 6 “Russian” billionaires and now only officially we have some 110. So Putin is a 100% Russian leader but not mine. He is the leader of the Russian billionaires. Unlike West supported Tadic he is hated by the West.
As for consulate issues the most problematic for us are the US visas. But I travel not much and I have never been there or the UK. Neither I am going to. I like it here and I prefer a passive rest to tourism. While my business here supposes that I have to spend much of my time in Moscow. Also I am lazy enough even to register in any of the social nets … Besides as you know Russia rather a part of the world than a country and one can enjoy his life here without consulate formalities. In any case Happy New Year and Merry Christmas to you and your American family ! Будь здоров !

Only one remark :

There's nothing extraordinary that Putin is celebrating Christmas and Easter outside Moscow. Almost always on such a day he visits a provincial village Church. Only this time it was St.Petersburg.

Happy and Peaceful Christmas Serbia !

I do not like the guy mainly because I do not believe, he honestly does serve the country and I also believe, he is something like Tadic, just more cleverly disguised. It's not some "nationalist" style-comment, just that there are countless signs, he and his clique does not care about the citizens as it should be. See Yakusha and RZD just as a little example.

Now regardless of my open dislike of Putin I was following the translation yesterday (it was parallel from both SPB and Moscow) and I was very much impressed by one fact, probably escaped by many: both the (still)-PM and the (still)-President were standing (true as VIP-s) but pretty much in the middle of people. No security was visible. I am sure there was - but nothing what I can describe as "omni-present" or "intrusive".

Sam applies to consulates - I was countless times in Russian consulates. The security is there of course - you are asked at the entry what you are up to, you explain, they open the door, you enter. Gynecologic / andrologic examination does not happen, that is reserved for your doctor. In some other consulates you can have fun as they do cavity search on you, guess what consulate.

Once I had to be in Serbian consulate for some paperwork. Not visa-related, just some minor paperwork and in old times many times at the Yugoslav consulate to pick up a free visa. There usually the door is simply open, no one even bothers to ask you any question - and that can be a problem sometimes because you have to find the person you need!

In old times (1980-s) I was at Chinese, DPRK and Vietnamese consulates (visa-related). Same story, you go in without anyone asking you anything - than you curse the communist bureaucracy because no one really taking care of you, you have to run around and ask for the lazy apparatchiks yourself. No cavity search either. Not even at DPRK consulate.

Try at U.K. or U.S. consulate - there all you can do is pray that the person who does the search is a cute, young female not a 250-pound Mexican-American dude. So far, I had bad luck only, I am not Captain Frisco to enjoy such things.
