A lot of good he did by separating Macedonia. He made the Albanians there more powerful after the Tetovo and Gostivar riots.

Aleks, I think you are very unfair to Mr Gligorov. We have a tradition where I come from in that you never speak ill of the dead no matter who they were. He did an excellent job in steering Macedonia away from the worst excesses of YU's breakup and when the Albanians rose in 2001, his hands were tied with the Ohrid Agreement under pressure from the US and EU. I'm not sure what benefit Macedonia would have had by remaining in a truncated YU and later Serbia, but Milosevic wisely divested YU alot of expense and bother by jettisoning Macedonia (and Slovenia) in late '91. Macedonia (like Slovenia), was of no strategic value or interest to Serbia whatsoever. That said, Kiro Gligorov was a worthy President and deserves credit for a lifetime work for his people. He was a good one.

RIP.

Aleks, are you so sure the Albanians of MK wouldn't have joined up with their Kosovar cousins and, with NATO's help, torn an even larger chunk off FRY? I think things worked out just fine for MK, especially since Sloba didn't send in the JNA when they left.
