What is the goal and objective of the meeting? I think it's good that prominent Serbs from around the region get together, but it should have a clear purpose, and that part was left out of the article.
I agree with Ari Gold's sentiments. The Serbian political class need to address the grievences of their people. Huge energy is wasted prancing around the world stage attending useless talking shops, when the ordinary man in the street struggles on a wage of 300 Euro's a month. Tadic is no longer representative of the people. I understand his fixation with redeeming the Serb nation in the eyes of the world given the disaster of the Milosevic years. But surrendering your national interests on the alter of Brussels and Washington is not the way to go about it. Protect the Serbs of Kosovo and step back from the EU. Let them come to you. Prostrating yourself Mr. President only leads to derision and scorn. Merkel wants to see you pliant and helpless. Kostunica had, I feel, the nations interests at heart. But he was vilified by the media and won't stand again. Serbia needs to set a new path for herself creating jobs and hope for her long suffering people. The birthrate would increase and a healthy nation would arise from the ashes. Give people jobs and encourage the professional and middle classes back home. Hopefully a new government would achieve this.
This is all fine and great..the problem is Tadic is not suited to represent "the motherland" in this conference or anywhere else for that matter. The most recent poll that came out said the DS are only going to get 25% of votes..who else do they expect to make up the other 25% to get in power?
The SPS betrayed its constituents by joining the DS after the election. Its voters were from the old pro Milosevic core and voted for the SPS because that was the party he founded. So who is going to vote for them now? Now that the SPS is neo-liberal Eurocratic why would anyone vote for them? The ones that believe EUtopia lies are already voting for the DS.
Oh how about the coalition between the ultra liberal Ceda Jovanovic and his new partner, Vuk Draskovic who throughout his political career has switched from monarchist, chetnik, conservative, ultra nationalist and now a 'EU-rocrat'. These people are all liars, opportunists and go wherever the political wind takes them.
The entire political elite need to go before conferences like these can have any meaning. Because I truly believe the people who are 'representing the motherland' in this conference has absolutely no intention of looking out for Serbia nor for Serbian national interests.
