The right decision by the UK government but very badly handled politically.

What is the phrase? Make haste with change, repent at leisure?

Considering how long the Lisbon and other treaties took to negotiate, such a 'minor' change is a insult. If the EU followed its own rules Fr & De would have been severely spanked for ignoring the 3% gdp debt rule, but as we have seen time and time again, it is "rule of law" for everybody else except when the big boys don't agree.

Why Serbia still wants to join a european system such as this that is now proven as corrupt to the core can only be due to desperation by the Tadic political clan and the total failure of the serbian political classes to have the courage to offer any alternative political dialogue other than "only the EU". If a trade based relationship with benefits is ok for a lot of UK conservatives, then why not for Serbia?

Also in the UK's favor is that they do actually silent have support from other EU member states but they are terried of standing up to the Germans. The UK is not isolated, idiotic possible, but not isolated and the ignorant EU pundits push. Regardless of whether it is in the Euro, it is still a very strong european economy that cannot be ignored. That is why it has a seat on European Central Bank committee. Neither France nor Germany have threatened to kick the UK out because they need them, the Germans particularly as they are much closer eye-to-eye on economics than they are with the french.

Why the bend over by Sarko. Rumour has it that a major european bank is very close to collapsing. My bet is that it is a french one as the top three have been downgraded by Moody's. It smells like sarko is selling France out to the Germans for his presidential bid. Who would have thought? He'll still loose just as Berlusconi did.

Out of all of this, who is covered in glory? The European Parliament of second class european politicians who have been totally sidelined. The EP is supposed to prove the european project's pillar of democracy but it is nowhere to be seen. WTF is it for then apart to suck up billions of euros of tax payers money to make a bunch of people fat and immune from any crisis?

What of the bureaucrats, the European Commission who kept quiet over blatant violations of the acquis communautaire and proper implementation of all those tortuously negotiated treaties? Nope, they want to go on strike because they will not get their automatic pay rises regardless of the economic crisis, and they don't even pay the full level of VAT!

What of the Council of Ministers? Fiddling whilst Rome burns. How many summits have they had? They keep on shutting down the metro Schuman (which is forever in a state of 'modernization') and are protected by white helmeted belgian paramilitary police behind collapsible barbed wire barriers. They don't want the great unwashed and p*ssed of european public getting too close.

They have all failed. The only european institution that has spoken out about rights vocally is the Coucil of Europe, but fortunately it is separate from the CoM, EP & EC.

The rest of europe won't forget Germany's behavior at this time and there will be consequences. Germany's vision of Europe is not a given even if the CoM have agreed to it on behalf of their citizens. The citizens haven't been asked.

I'm not usually a fan of the British government but in this instance I have to say well done. Cameron has simply done what is best for his own country and citizens i.e those who elected him. It's something of a rarity in modern Europe I agree.

Tbf I'm glad DC has blocked the treaty even though I'm not opposed to further treaty changes as such. It was only 5 minutes ago since we updated the EU with the Lisbon Treaty. I don't the think the economic circumstances and situation are right for further treaty changes. Give it 5-10 years, then see about Treaty Change once economies are recovering.

If they want to change something, how about EU citizens being able to elect the President of the European Commission, President of the European Parliament and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy? Aka the Holy Trinity of the EU instead of them being appointed. We should be able to elect politicians for these three senior posts.

Britian will never join the Euro. Well, I tend to agree.

Mircea, when do you think Romania will join the Euro? Germany needs as much help as it can get. Too bad about your Schengen accession. Looks like you'll have to wait for that one.

This is history repeating. Germany will be crushed once again as it attempts to control Europe. It is economical this time around. Once again, congratulations to Croatia for signing the accession treaty. They deserve to be members of the EU. Hopefully the doors will close once Croatia is in.

Well I must congratulate the UK and Hungary. I hope Sweden and the Czechs hold a referendum on this treaty. The Eurozone is falling apart, this is just the first cracks. The Fourth Reich did not get their way to control all of Europe. I say it is time to celebrate, for all nations that are free and independent.
Cheers!!

I don't think many people in UK believe anything "call me Dave" utters. When Murdoch's hacking scandal broke out in UK Cameron was asked in parliament whether he met Murdoch while in office to which he replied that he had no re-collection of such meetings.Yet the following day his office revealed that he had met Murdoch 27 times with Murdoch entering 10 Downing Street through the back door to avoid publicity.

So lets not be fooled by DC; he is not interested in speaking up for the UK. The only people he is interested in are the financial sector who bankroll his party and were also the main culprits in the financial meltdown of 2008 forcing the UK government to partly nationalise the banking sector costing the taxpayer £800 billion.

Yet despite the financial calamity Cameron is still keen to protect the Ponzi Square Mile thus rejecting regulation and transparency on banks, as suggested by France and Germany, which he sees as a barrier to growth.I think one more reason for persisting with such a policy is the fact that the City of London is UK's main industry.

Looking back at UK's position in Europe it can summarised as having one foot in and one foot out.Get the bits you like and discard the rest, protect the perverse banking system and speculators and yet claim a place "at the heart of Europe".

I am not basically against Cameron's veto-although I think is irrelevant for the Eurozone-but if he and his party have so many concerns over the EU then the best possible place is the ballot box which the European elites dislike most.
