We shouldn't have given a permission for Germany to unite...
(aaayyy, 7 December 2011 16:09)

We should given it - but not without conditions. It was a free giveaway and a sign of the goodwill. In exchange we got nothing...

Certainly not Serbia since nobody cared to ask it; Russia was paid to agree, France got the infamous Euro, UK is still crying "4th Reich" on every occasion, the US didn't care. So please tell us: who is "we"?
(pro-me, 7 December 2011 17:58)

Russia withdrew its troops from Eastern Germany, allowing Germany to unite. People in Russia didn't get anything for that unprecedental gift, while some high ranked officials got some money which could be seen as bribe.

Germany had extraodinary geopolitical skills of designing world map, every time it practices its skills we can see more bloody wars. Though local nationalists also contributed to the wars of course.

German's don't whine? WWII was a lot of German whining about what happened after WWI. Germany messing with Serbs again. Just like they destroyed Yugoslavia when a Serb got to ran it. Germany says Serbia must recognize Kosovo independence? Tadic will do it. No doubt about that. Tadic wants EU membership which is somehow being treated as something Serbs want when the polls say they don't want it in the numbers they did when they chose Tadic and EU over Kosovo.

9:30 is too early.
16:40 is too late.

Merkel's comment about parallel institutions recently was a humiliation to Serbia and to Tadic's policy of EU cooperation. I think her policy is ill-considered and she should show a better attitude. Big sticks should not be over-used. The war criminals have been sent to the Hague - now is the time to reward Serbia.

There does come a time when Serbia needs to assert its own limits - at whatever cost. Perhaps that time is now. Serbia must join the EU, but only with its assertion of ownership of Kosovo in place. Serbia's humiliation should only be taken so far.

By going along with 1244 Serbia is doing the world a favour. There are alternatives which could cost lives and destabilise the region. While pragmatics rule, 1244 will continue to be in place. 1244 was set up at the end of a war but it is not something that has to stand forever. In legal practice, Serbia could derogate 1244 because the attempted udi is an active breach of its terms and then legitimately seek to take back control. If some political party or group succeeds in destabilising the region, this degeneration is perfectly possible. Tadic wants to avoid this.

Serbia had (and has) a legal right to defend its territory by force - the problem was not the fighting (which was legal) but the issue of war crimes (which were illegal). Serbia's mistake was to not conform to the rules of war and human rights legislation. That was effectively the invitation from Milosevic that bought NATO into the situation.

If Serbia is not given candidate status quickly, there is a distinct possibility that reawakened resentments may come into play. Moderate politics is in its infancy in Serbia, but is still the preference of most people - without support from the outside (not just a big stick) destabilisation is still very possible.

I don't go along with the dream of some of the posters that the EU is about to fall apart - economic depressions do pass. However, I don't go along with the idea that Germany should be the sole determiner of EU policy. Merkel is not everything. The EU should be ruled by all the nations in it, not just by the Germans.

Serbia needs encouragement - candidate status would be a good step. The last few days have shown a positive attitude from Belgrade. The people of Northern Kosovo border the country in which they were born - any artificial border imposed between them and their heritage is bound to cause friction. Belgrade has shown as good a level of willingness to deal with this recent situation as peaceably as is reasonably possible. It is well accepted that Pristina would be happy to quietly ethnically cleanse the north - Merkel does not appear to care about that.

Merkel is wrong to turn Kosovo into a key issue and could show better understanding of the needs of the locals.

Actually, this is good for Serbia as the EU is still a sinking ship. For now I am happy to exchange my US dollars for dinars each year and support the Serbian economy. :)

Don't be silly - they lost Königsberg, capital of East Prussia site since the late Middle Ages (their "hearths" there were undoubtedly older than most of those of the Serbs living in northern Kosovo). Hundreds of thousands of Germans were driven, fairly brutally, from where they had lived for centuries in settlements throughout Europe (where they had been invited to settle, because of their skills), with no talk of compensation. Germans tend not to whine, so maybe you missed it.
