Well, if you look at the recent development of Serbia and if you compare it to other European countries, it will become obvious why EU accession is so important. Corruption incresed again and is higher than in any other EU country (Corruption Perception Index), Serbia rankes as the 85th country in press freedom (also below every EU country) and in my opinion you cannot develop a country without a free and independent press, because it gives feedback to politicians and informs the people. Without it, they are blind. The pressures of the EU and the adoption of the European legal framework provide security for investors. Investors from the EU are Serbia's main investors. It's not Russia (only 6% of Serbia's exports go to Russia). Same for investments. Many Serbs say Serbia should develop it's agricultural sector... Sorry, but this is crap. You can develop it a bit of course, but if you look at prosperous countries, the agricultural sector contributes with 1-2% to GDP. And they produce enough. There is overproduction in the EU and US in the aggricultural sector.. Besides, the aggricultural policy of the EU makes it impossible for Serbia to compete in the European market, because agricultural products are highly subsedised in the EU (about 60% of the EU budget goes to this sector!!). Apart from that, if you look at the economic development of every new member state from the 2004 enlargement, you will see that the economic development increased after accession. Recently I read an article in Blic that Angela Merkel wants to kick out Greece of the EU for ten years.. This is crap again. First of all it is not possible to kick out a country from the EU (basic knowledge about the EU), second it would not make sense. Those are all politically motivated false information. Germany might lead a bit during the eurocrisis, because it is the biggest contributor and one of the most stable countries in the Eurozone, but in general politics the mechanisms of the EU ensure a great saying of the smaller countries and they have a greater saying than the percentual relationship of inhabitants would suggest. Without the EU, the Serbian population would be only 1% in Europe and 0.1% (1/1000) in the world. Serbia's power would defenitely increase with a membership in the EU. Apart from these facts, becoming a candidate country allows greater access to huge EU funds for all sectors. Especially in the social sector, minority rights and so on. The benefit for the EU countries would be greater stability in the region and economies of scale (greater benefit for both through a better allocation of factors). Investments and growth depend on stability, enforcement of contracts and so on, I cannot really see how this should improve in Serbia without the EU.
