"Swedish FM Carl Bildt believes Serbia should be granted the EU candidate status in line with recommendations of the European Commission's enlargement package."

And in line with standards and general requirements for new EU candidates. Its not fair and makes no sense to impose new conditions for Kosovo on Serbia - same standards for everyone.

The north of Kosovo needs to have some form of independence. To be ruled by Pristina is out of the question. It's as simple as that. The brave serbs at the barricades will show whether the deal between Serbia and Pristina is in their favour.

The old Serbian EU lobbyist is busy at work again. Serbia should not be given EU candidate status until the Serbian politicians do their homework and agree to have good relations will all their neighbors. Serbia continues to play a very destabilizing role in the Balkans (as it has for the past twenty years) and is using it's Serbian minority proxies to destabilize Bosnia, Kosovo, and Montenegro in order to blackmail the EU into giving concessions and then it has people like Bild who advocate for appeasement in order to not make trouble for Serbia's radical elite. Serbia's behavior needs to change and the EU needs to keep the pressure on Serbia in order to get those reforms to take place over time. Sure Serbian's can elect radical politicians and turn away from the EU but that will be an experiment they will come to regret and they'll soon enough turn back to trying to join the EU once they realize that "back to Milosevic" gets them the same results that Milosevic got them in the 90s. Serbia has no alternative to integrating into European society and the EU should make sure that the process of integration forces Serbia to face its demons and to change it's approach towards Serb minorities in neighboring states. EU, NATO, and the US need to keep up the pressure on Serbia to reform and need to support those politicians and NGOs that are trying to bring about reforms in Serbian society. The EU, NATO, and US also need to step up their efforts with Serbia's neighbors in order to encourage the entire region to move forward towards Euro-Atlantic integrations.
