NY Times just reported that theh Islamists have now claimed a decisive victory with some 65% of the seats in parliament "at the expense of the liberal parties and youth activists who set off the revolution." http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/01/world/middleeast/voting-in-egypt-shows-mandate-for-islamists.html

Seems to me the joke is on the West after all since it was they who had asked the Yankee and Israel friendly Mubarak to step down. I don't know much about Egytian politics but I hope this scenario is true -- would be just desserts for the Yankees!

Democracy is not just about how people get elected.

Democracy is also about how people are removed from power.

The islamists will be a democratic government only if they are also prepared to spend time in opposition when it is the will of the people.

With a large section of the Egyptian population unable to read the ballot papers and guided by symbols to help them identfying the party they were voting for one wonders whether this election has anything to do with the democratic process.Furthermore,Mubarak's old mafia friends won't let go the levers of power no matter the election result.Although the polls indicate that Islamists will win and despite their cosiness with the military Field Marshal Tantawi and his cronies will still run the country as a fiefdom.
