There is only one reason why the EU assenttion process is good and important for Serbia.

Serbia is lost. Serbia is broken.

You can sit in Australia or Chicago and type "no no, it isn't, I was there last year for a week and had a great time" all you like. Serbia is deeply broken and broken in ways that makes it not know that it's broken.

I could write 100 essays, but suffice it to say, when you call emergency services and get hung up on because they don't feel like coming for the heart attack of an old person; when your payment system and bureaucracy is so far back in the dark ages, that is too difficult for all but the most motivated foreign investors to set up shop; when you have an entire society that, because of communism, is so disconnected from real-world cause-and-effect economic realities. well, then you have a problem.

People don't like hearing this, but Serbia can't fix itself. Maybe it CAN, eventually, sometime, after falling farther and farther behind in a few generations.

But.

EU assention gives as good a blue-print as Serbia's going to get for fixing what's broken with it throughout its country and society.

I agree with a lot of people here posting against the EU. EU is certainly no panacea (nor is Russia, nor is anything. There's no miracle that's going to happen). However, the process of joining would tackle a lot of serious problems that Serbia has.

I have been commenting on issues on B92 since 2008 and despite changing events that even the media has been writing about, I am still amazed at the level of ignorance displayed by the Albanians.
You really have no clues what so ever. But let me try and get it through your head what has happened.
Prior to 2007 the EU was, on the surface going well, but people in the finance industry knew that if something went wrong the entire western financial system would collapse. Some even wrote books about it, but profit making was so high the vast majority did not care.
Then the great crash of 2007 and the collapse of Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Greece. But it was Greece that was a great concern as its debt to GDP was 166% and if it failed the entire system it could have a domino affect.
Greece failed and the richer EU countries tried to bail it out, but it’s so far into debt that it’s become hopeless. What happened - Italy. Now when Italy needs a bail out then next quickly into succession comes France as its banks are heavily into the Greek bailout.
All of EU banks are technically BANKRUPT; let me say it again BANKRUPT. So Germany cannot alone stop what has begun and it’s a known fact that what happens in the EU will badly affect the US.
Do you need me to paint you a picture?
As far as countries in the Balkans working hard to become members of the Union, I saw during the breakup of the Soviet Union people in denial; communist party meetings giving out medals for promoting socialist values, commendations etc. It was like the Titanic sinking and the orchestra playing to keep the passengers calm. But then again what can the leaders of these countries do when they have been promising sold gold goodies and heavenly lifestyles once in the EU.
You should watch Croat TV and see just how concerned they are with all this occurring around them.

Ok, let me get this straight, the EU which has no money and owes trillions, is swimming in debt, is going to shower Serbia with Euros and turn it into a Shangri-La? And they are going to do this by borrowing from China and Russia (at high interest rates), and giving it to Serbia (at even higher interest rates)?
No thanks. We will cut out the middle man (the EU) and go straight to Russia and China for the loans, at much much lower interest rates. Besides, as sj and many others have noted, the EU is bankrupt and 'done like dinner'.
Cheers!!

Some of you guys are so funny. Wrelly !! :D

I don't think that any country in the balkans are working very hard to be a member of an union that will sink next year. That is delusional. Serbia for example will recognize Kosovo as and independent state to be a member of EU and you think/dream that EU will not exist next year ??

You guys wrelly make my day some time. But let's see what happends next year this time. I don't think your nickname will exist here on B92.

....

Sj. is correct on all accounts... the EU is over "Kaput"... open your eyes and see the misery it has brought the European people...

RIP and may it never rise again

I can’t stop laughing at all of this EU nonsense. As I said before it’s like the Titanic is sinking and the head chef is deciding whether to have fish or beef for the main course.
The real question is what candidature status are they talking about??? Is it the EU? This time next year the EU will be a memory.
