UNESCO won't function without the US? NOT!!

The US rejoined UNESCO in 2002 after an absence of 19 years as a member.

UNESCO will go on without the US just like they did for the 19 years without them.

Never said it would not still exist, just will not function very well. These are from the head of UNESCO itself, who said they cannot function without the money from the US. There are other members of the large contribution team that are vowing to withhold funds. Currently China supplies over 3% and russia a little over 1% of the budget, I really don't see them kicking in another 22%. Maybe Serbia will since it is boasting that UNESCO is going to be in their pocket now.
By the way it is not my desire for the US to withhold funds, I think that UNESCO is a worthy organization. But I do know that changing the law is a bit more complicated than in some countries, but it can be done.

Zoran.

The US being a permanent member of the Security Council, the only organ of the UN with any power, is part of the UN charter.

The chances of the US loosing their vote in the General Assembly are pretty minimal, but even if they did, it would mean nothing.

Plus.... Notice that the UN is located in New York?

without having to resort to reductio ad ridiculum argument

but since oh koso my koso cannot show that mars and pluto are not serbia then they must be...

You are not only looking at 22% of the budget but also those of other members that will follow suit, and the US gives above the 22% to help fund special projects.

That's a good sign, let them leave and lose influence over such clubs. The BRICs seem to be gaining influence these days, as a sign of the new world order.

I wonder if we can get Palestine into other clubs and kick the US out. "Palestine" could become a powerful weapon. :) Now who said "Kosova" was a unique case?

The US either pays up or loses its voting rights. If it chooses the later I'm sure the $60/$80 million it contributes will be found elsewhere.
(Zoran, 8 November 2011 14:09)
Considering that it will take a Congressional law change to allow the US to pay the debt, it will not happen quickly. The loss of voting rights is not really a big deal in an organization of this type as the US has 1 out of 193 votes, not a huge right. However good luck on "finding" that money somewhere else. Maybe SErbia can just kick it in. It is doubtful that anyone is going to kick it in since it will not afford them any privileges. You are not only looking at 22% of the budget but also those of other members that will follow suit, and the US gives above the 22% to help fund special projects.

They can help dream of ways that money could be spent if UNESCO had any, but as the head of UNESCO said they will not be able to function without US funding.
