First, I think its obvious that this attack is the proximate result of a culture of hatred of Gays by extremists and by the utter and complete failure of the Serbian Police Forces and Dacic to arrest, prosecute, and JAIL those responsible for terroristic threats and physical violence against Gay Serbs.

No one has been jailed for their criminal actions last year at the pride parade. No one has been jailed for their criminal actions this year using terroristic threats to cancel the basic human rights of Gay Serbs (and no one will be).

If you are a skinhead thug/Orthodox anti-Gay activist, you know that violence against Gays will not be punished appropriately.

And to the ignorant person claiming discrimination in the Bible Belt. I am a native of Alabama, and Gay Pride Parades take place throughout the South without violence. When violence happens (as it does infrequently) against members of the LGBT community, those crimes result in real criminal prosecutions and extremely severe jail sentences. The Mayor of the largest city in the South is an Out Lesbian. The sheriff of the third largest city in the South is also a Lesbian. Gays sit as popularly elected state legislators in Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Please compare the situation in Serbia to Iran or corrupt Russia rather than the Bible Belt of today. You are free to compare Serbia today to the Alabama of the 1960's, where illegal discrimination against unpopular minorities was combined with police and judicial nullifaction of human rights laws and when the police colluded with those supporting/participating/cheerleading violence and human rights abuses against minority groups.

Steve,

You're posting on a news article about a girl that got stabbed on the street wearing an LGBT shirt saying:

"What I don't understand is why the LGBT can't take baby steps with this whole "right to be gay" situation. Why not let it get more accepted before trying to march thru the streets?"

It can easily be inferred that you're talking about the incident in the article rather than the gay pride parade, which the article isn't about.
(Danilo, 18 October 2011 00:33)

I don't care what it looks like I said. I cleared that up. My comment is about the bigger picture, and not just a single incident. The bigger picture is what could lead to more incidents.

You made a stupid comment: "Bad news for the next generation of Serbs"

Did you see me go off about how this comment isn't about the next generation of Serbs. So go put your foot in your mouth. Just because one dumb kid did something stupid, doesn't mean they all will.

And if you want to talk about next generations, why don't you go look at your youth in Croatia still saluting the Nazi regime. Now talk about troubled youth.

Listen to yourself. You're blaming a stabbing victim for the shirt she was wearing. We don't even know whether she was gay or not, do we? does it make a difference? Someone was stabbed for their shirt.

Danilo

I wasn't talking about this incident/victim. I am talking about the pride parade in general. I think that was clear to all the level headed readers here.

danilo,
please be careful how you interpret things. from what you're suggesting a benign question asking for a comparison between serbia and kosovo regarding the lgbt communities is interpreted as 'they're such animals...'. i didn't get that interpretation.
furthermore, to be fair here, when one feels comfortable painting everyone (serbia's future generations) with the brush strokes of one person, i ask who's being childish. we both know one bad apple does not make or speak for a generation.
lets not discuss your beliefs regarding how the majortiy of people feel in serbia wrt lgbt because as you've read and pointed out it was a single person, not the whole society.
its okay to admit you've overstepped your boundaries. the comparison is fair, your extrapolation is outrageous and your defense is commendable, but misplaced

What I don't understand is why the LGBT can't take baby steps with this whole "right to be gay" situation. Why not let it get more accepted before trying to march thru the streets? It is your right, but let things calm down and be a little more accepted before you parade thru the streets with it. I think once the LGBT community accepts that, and the citizens slowly get accustomed to it, there will be no violence. Then everyone will just live their own life and leave each other alone.

No, mastablasta

It's extremely childish to respond to a case of a minor stabbing someone in Serbia's capital city for wearing an LGBT shirt with "BUT THEY'RE SUCH ANIMALS IN KOSOVOOOOOOOOO!!!!11"

danilo, while you may say comparing serbia to worse off places, how about comparing serbia to its neighbours. if one can't make first comparisons against neighbours, then one not need to compare oneself against a far of basis. there is no point in comparing serbia to usa, uk, germany. just like there is no point in comparing kosovo,or croatia, bosnia to those countries.
when i compare cheeses, they all come wrapped individually or none of them do. no point in comparing pastic cheese to some artisan cheese is there?
so if someone is using kosovo as a benchmark for comparison, it may not the best benchmark to strive for, but alas it is local. perhaps comparing serbia's homophobia (or homophilia) could be compared to croatia's is better.
but at the end of the day, if kosovo says its equal and equivalent, then isn't it a fair comparison?

anyone getting stabbed & suffering serious injuries is sad. I just think that this happens for millions of reasons every day in every part of the world.

Black, white, asian, old, religious markings/symbols, tattoos, soccer shirts..

They are all reasons that people are attacked for and it's stupid to bring down a whole country because of an attack like this.

Or, are you implying that Kosovo Albanians are to blame for this one as well?

@Vladimir

Why do Serbs so often compare themselves with people in a worse situation than they are. Only losers do this. I'm sure it's worse in Gabon or Pakistan. I'm better off than the drunk sleeping under the newspaper in the park, but it doesn't somehow make me proud to know this.

Such a silly remark.

Although I strongly condemn the stabbing, to suggest that this happened because the pride parade was cancelled is a load of BS, if it wasn't cancelled there would be more violence.

Also Jo, your understanding of fascists is completely wrong.

Jo

This is just another confirmation that Belgrade not only surrenders to fascists but also are not capable of defending members from minorities.
