I seem to remember that a French football supporter was murdered on the streets of Belgrade a couple of years ago. So when are the authorities going to ban football matches in Belgrade on the grounds of potential violence?

Tom, holding or not holding a parade in Belgrade is not a loss or victory in the war on prejudice. That war is being won or so it seems lost every day in classrooms, homes and offices of government every day. The day the parade can take place in Belgrade without all this emotion is the day that war will be won. Right now all a parade will do is result in state violence on it's people, injuries and damage to public and private property to prove what, simply something we already know.

Of course the government was afraid of election results. But the thing is we cannot just assume that because they cancelled it at last minute, all those people who were against the parade are not just going to praise them for it, the fact the government even considered allowing it to happen was bad enough. The fact is that pretty much all these voters who were against the parade hate the government for its poor action taken on Kosovo, and for poor economic situations. All the cancellation meant was that there was no violence, so many people still hate this government its just that allowing the shame parade to take place would have really twisted the knife that has already stabbed the Serbian people.

So terrorism and violence wins in Belgrade. There is never a reason to give into violence by blaming the victims of violence. Any violence isn't the fault of those who peacefully protest, but those who commit violence and who refuse to do their jobs.

Elections always play a role. However, there were good reasons to not allow this procession -- the consequences for which the authorities would in the end be responsible: violence on the streets of the White City and people hurt.
