Chere Francois (I get you're French, so good for you!), you may rest assured, there is no need for Romania to do more to ensure the existence of the independent and sovereign Republic of Moldova.

There is widespread agreement in Romania that our sister-and-neighbour country should stay like that, because any steps down the path of the nationalistic dream of "Greater Romania" will bring us nothing good. Actually, we have to thank the ex-Yugoslavs for this sober approach. Furthermore, you may observe that Romania has no problem with the name of Moldavia Republic, although almost two-thirds or the historical province of Moldavia are today part of Romania, as a region... it's a similar situation with Greece versus Macedonia, with Greeks using the name "Macedonia" for their region - unlike them, we have no problem (probably because the vast majority of Moldavians are, practically, Romanians, and we are part of the same people).

On a personal note, I think it's better for everybody to have a 2.7 millions Romanians living in another (Romanian) country instead having a unique, bigger/unified country with added minorities of 440,000 Ukrainians, 370,000 Russians and 150,000 Gagauzi. Last but not least, the territory beyond the Dniestr River (the area of the separatist "Republic of Transnistria") has never been part of the historical province of Moldavia - but it was given by USSR to the Soviet Republic of Moldova (as, for example, Bukovina, a region in North of Romania, at the border with Ukraine, was never part of Ukraine, but was wrested from Romania through the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact and given to USSR, ending up today as part of Ukraine...). Therefore, to enlighten you regarding the state-of-play, one strong reason for Romania refusing to recognize Kosovo is the simple fact that such an action would undermine Bucharest support for Moldavia Republic's sovereignty over the separatist territory of Transnistria (of which authorities, as you may know, are fully supported by Moscow).

Therefore, dear Francois, the "politique" down here, in this forsaken corner of the world, is more complicated than you (are even able to) imagine. So, I would kindly advise you to do some research (I see you have access to internet...) before contributing to this forum. Of course, if you are not French, but citizen of Belgium, than I would simply say "mind the business of your own ready-to-explode-under-nationalist-pressure country".
And if you're Canadian, or American, than simply stay out of such discussion, as Canada or US have, together, 20 times less history than any country in Balkans, and 10 times less experience regarding nationalist conflicts and their consequences!

If Romania does not want borders changing, it should also forbid any unification with Moldova by law. Otherwise Gagauzia will be lost just like Transnistria.

@ben:
your joke would be fun if not missing the point: the so-called smuggling activity of Romanian gendarmes was not oriented in bringing something to Kosovo (to locals or internationals), but from Kosovo and/or Macedonia to Romania... I know this very well, my brother was one of those gendarmes :)))
Anyway, it is the time for our guys to come home, and let Kosovo to it's troubled existence.

No doubt it is now inescapable that EULEX does the bidding of albanian organized crime. What little credibility EULEX and KFOR ever had is finally slipping away.

Who's gonna supply now them with cheap smuggled cigarettes???

I'm sure you have got some friends who will happily do so.

Good riddance guys. They were good for TV shows, displaying their carate/kung fu skills , but that is all. I attended so many events when they where station in Peja/Pec right near green market. I must say we had a nice cocktail and barbecue during those times.

178 professionals police officers less in Kosovo is like one bucket of water out of a pool full of crime and corruption is taken away.

Very professional and well experienced Gendarmery Officers. Both Kosovo Albanians and Kosovo Serbs used to be afraid in front of them. Actually there is about respect for Romanian Gendarmes.
