Operation Storm - 350 Serbian casualities (1 civilian killed during the bombing of Knin - now compare this to Vukovar), end of hostilities in HR and BiH, prevention of another Serbia-led massacre in Bihac and Croatia restoring power over its legitimate, internationally recognized borders....

So-called "Srpska Krajina" - 1500 Croatian civilian casualties, torture camps, rape camps....all in hopes of forming a Greater Serbia which had no legitimacy whatsoever.....

Please some sanity people - to compare Gotovina with Mladic, Seselj, Karadzic is totally out of line.....remember Manjaca, Srebrenica, even the 50 000 that fled Vojvodina during the conflicts....to deny that Croats committed war crimes is wrong, but there was no systematic criminal acts or intention, unlike on the Serbian side......

Just imagine that the Serbian army had defeated the Croats in this way....would anyone been allowed to flee? How many Manjacas would there be? 250 civilian casualties? There were more casualties just from the hospital in Vukovar after it fell than in all of Operation Storm.....

Croatia sadly had to end the war that was started by the Head Powers of Yugoslavia controlled by Serbia of course. The 4th strongest army in Europe could not over run the poorly equiped but highly motivated Croats. As the saying says "What goes around comes around" May God bless you all.
(Mr K, 26 September 2011 03:57)

A web of lies here.
1. the JNA was the 4th Strongest army in europe, in about 1946, By about 1990 they'd dropped to 10-15th

2. They never tried to overrun croatia, the generals offered to do so in 1991, promising to be in zagreb in hours, but Milosevic refused to let this happen, the argument being that Croatia has a right to a nation, but not to such extraordiary boundries

3. The Croats were not heavily outnumbered, (at least not by the time they gained victories in 1995), in fact it was quite the opposite, In Operation storm there were about 250,000 Croat troops and only 10,000 Serb defenders

4. Belgrade didnt start the wars, Slovenia did

And some people think Serbs are the hypernationalists of the Balkans.
(Mike, 25 September 2011 06:46)

Well, fortunately, they currently doesn't form the government, but if you sum the voters Radicals and the DSS, then you know how many hypernationalists are in Serbia.

"Does anybody smell the stink of HDZ election strategy behind this?" (bganon)

-- It's clear as day. Josipovic is currently the most popular figure in Croatia, easily enjoying popular approval in the 80% range. Kosor and her HDZ are suffering in the polls, largely beause they're at the helm (which happens to any governing party) but also because HDZ has been forced to make some "painful" concessions in the last year in order to get EU membership for next year. Chief of these concessions is finally being forced to privatize at least 5 shipyards that have been kept nationalizes since the 1990s, thus jeopardizing the jobs of thousands of people. Then there's land restitution from before 1945, which I'm sure is also including those Serbs that chose to kept the books open since 1995. These, added with the still-shock of state-sponsored narratives of Storm being virtuous and pure now challenged by the Hague, and you have a large group of Croats now exposed to the sobering realities that they were insulated from since Tudjman. Kosor is catering to the angry reactionary crowd because that's all she's got left.

And some people think Serbs are the hypernationalists of the Balkans.

"Bishop Mile Bogović, member of Catholic Church" this man if he is human should be excommunicated from the Croatian Catholic Church and jailed unless they support him like the Croatian Catholic Church did the Ustasa during World War 2 where they raped, murdered 800000 Serbians from the same areas that Gotovina and Markac where trialed for in the Hague and the Croat military Operation Storm recognized as a criminal enterprise. EU membership might subdue this attitude.

and just think the only thing oprtation storm was them killing old and defensless people because the world told the serbs to leave are they would bomb serbia ,so in other words the croatian army did nothing for 5 years to a small serb rebel group of only 55,000 fighters defending the serb lands of krajina against over 250,000 croat forces so it shows how strong serbs realy are from history and modern times and the west and the world also said croats could never defeat the serbs if it wasnt for the world telling them to pull out and here is the proof of that but the west now are putting it against the croats so it doesnt hurt the west at all smart move from america and the west for this.

Does anybody smell the stink of HDZ election strategy behind this? I haven't read Croatian media reports but I'm certain that the media (unlike the 90's) have been information Croatian citizens of why this build up of Croatian nationalism (and of associated concepts such as anti Serbism) is going on in this moment. This artificial or enforced outburst of nationalism will fail.

Don't get me wrong these efforts will rally the hard core 'patriots' on the right of Croatian politics, but a majority of Croatians are trying to look foreward to a better future, rather than revelling in the past.

Besides, I bet that some of these so called diaspora groups will lose certain contracts and influence in government circles if HDZ lose power, so its no wonder they are creeping out of the woodwork.

It is rather interesting how many, not all, but many Croats seem to recognize and respect Western principles of Rule of Law and embrace the legitimacy of highly established global institutions like The Hague when they prosecute Serb war criminal indictees, and in fact demand their extradition to The Hague, but when the shoe is on the other foot, they do not seem to harbor all that respect and recognition of such an indisputably esteemed institution. Somehow, in the Croat mindset, Serbian hands are the only hands that are covered with blood, and the ethnic cleansing of Serbs from the Krajina region by Croat forces was done with white gloves and within the bounds of legality. Is the idea that ethnic cleaning by Serbs is bad, while ethnic cleansing by Croats is good? That is very dangerous and bizarre logic. Thank God that the Hague has acted with integrity and objectivity. Shame on those Croats who protest: your process of independence does not justify your war crime of ethnic cleansing.

A badly chosen title. No, it's exactly tho opposite: Justice would have lost its balance if the Hague would ignore all the war crimes against Serbian civilians committed in Krajina during 'Operation Storm' which were ordered by these generals
