This notion of an international community is only US interests and nothing else. When Milosevic turned down the US for a base in Serbia that is when your Albos got support and not before.
(sj, 21 September 2011 00:23)

Who told you that, your Malaysian friend again ? :) But let’s assume it is so; it confirms what I’ve always said that international relations are a matter of interests. When Russia’s interests align with Serbia’s, it will support it, when not, it will dump it, like it did in 1999 with resolution 1244. The same with US which will support Kosovo as long as their interests align, and then it will dump it.

In fact the KLA were considered a terrorist organisation. Look at the Albanian President,, Thaci, a criminal in the true sense of the word, but now a valued US ally – tells you all about democratic processes and due process and rule of law LOL.
(sj, 21 September 2011 00:23)

Democratic process and rule of law are for within the US; US is not there to spend its taxpayers money to make the others do the same. If other countries want to be democratic or have the rule of law, that’s better, but if they don’t, all the US cares is that they serve US interests. I commend your hope that US should promote democracy and rule of law in other countries, but who’s going to pay for that if there is not some other interest ? You ?

These days the US is even a laughing stock amongst people living in the first world.
(sj, 21 September 2011 00:23)

I live in the first world; haven’t seen any stock being laughed at, be that US, Russian, Chinese, Serbian, or you name it. Who told you that ? Your Malaysian friend again :)

This is an attempt by the west to break this status quo, but nothing will change.
(sj, 21 September 2011 00:23)

Why should it change ? The West is having a good life with its citizens earning, on average, several time more than the average citizens of paradises like Russia, China, Serbia, Kosovo and the like.

Presevo ok, then RS with Serbia and it may work.

sj - its always the fault of the US isn't it? never serbia or the serbs.

Wally - the situation in the North of Kosovo is not as you describe it. the serbs north of the ibar river do not want to be incorporated to Prishtina. there is no administrative police to kick out the serbs, whatever you believe. even if there was one, NATO troops wouldn't allow it. this is not some sort of patriotic resistance at an attempt to subjugate. however, if we are going to discuss partition, to which i am not averse, we should perhaps look to iclude presheva and bujanova in any split. seems only fair.

as for serb historical presence in kosovo, its obvious that it exists. i am not for a moment claiming the serbs have no cultural heritage in the territory, of course they do. but, that is the same as saying the italians have a legacy in over half of Europe (the Roman Empire), it doesn't mean half of the continent belongs to them now. the simple truth is this, kosovo is lost to serbia. milosevic made pretty damn sure of it. what serbs must be guaranteed is protection and equal footing the building of the country. i have yet to see a kosovar policy that aims to kick out its serb inhabitants.

icj- you really need to get a life. Living off someone elses misery is a sad and lonely existence. Sums you up to a tee.
(Jeff, 20 September 2011 11:15)

who is in misery ? As for my life, I'm certainly not spending it in barricades implementing Kosovo's government decisions to block the traffic of goods from Serbia :)

adriatik- you are a breath of fresh air on these boards. Polite and courteous. (cant be said of me all the time thats for sure).
I fear Kosovo will be poor whatever happens. Endemic criminality and corruption make Serbia proper look like Switzerland. Plus your leaders are of the worst sort in my humble opinion. You can't blame Serbia for all your problems. Look in the mirror.
Why are the Albanians so opposed to independence for the North. You will get almost everything anyway. We could shake hands and walk away (SERbs would protest but would probably accept it). It would be far more secure and sustainable as well. You cannot deny Serbia's historical and political rights in Kosovo. Yugoslavia and Serbia were partitioned, why is Kosovo sacrosanct?

Wally

pre 12 godina

adriatik-i think we will have to agree to disagree. Electricity company is Serbian property appropriated by Albanians etc. etc. Do you think the Albanians are paying their bills. No way.
Are you telling me those ancient monasteries were built by Albanians? I know the Albanians are desperately trying to make Serbian culture their own to strengthen a sense of identity and nationhood that doesn't exist but even UNESCO says they are Serbian (thank you France)
Whatever-here's hoping it will all works itself out in the end.
Take care.

pss

pre 12 godina

The Germans have a terrible history involving the Serbs and they would be stupid to use any of that equipment because it would be tantamount to opening live fire on the demonstrators plus the Serbs can always blow up sections of the road and it would be just as useless. This is a peaceful demonstration and to turn up the heat on such a situation would pour condemnation on the US and EU with questions such as if the Albanians can secede why cant the Serbs? These are questions very difficult to supply answers to.

Nothing will happen.
(sj, 20 September 2011 04:36)
I agree that for at this time it would not be a wise move to forcibly remove the barricades as this is what all Belgrade is hoping for as it would give (unfounded) fodder for Serbia to site violence against Serbs.
However, if you look at probably any country of the world blockades would not be allowed to stand.
As far as the question of Serb secession vs Kosovo secession. The Kosovo Albanians attempted secession before and did not get international support. It was only after the actions of Milosevic, and the fact that the UN had to make Kosovo a protectorate followed by the fact that Serbia has never offered any plan of reintegration of the people of Kosovo that the international community began to support the idea of an independent Kosovo.
These are not evident in north Kosovo.
I do not think the implementation of customs agents at 2 checkpoints equate to loading people on the back of trucks and dumping them at the border with threats of death if they return.

adriatik

pre 12 godina

Wally - I visit Kosovo every 6 months, I know my family pays their bills. I cannot talk for other families. I do not seek to paint a picture of Kosovo that odes not exist, the economy is poor, the infrastructure non existent and very poor perspectives in life. its the reason why I do not live there. one of the reasons why kosovo is so poor, is due to the disruption by Serbia. now that Kosovo has responded in kind (the trade ban) it has at least forced a partial opening for its products. However, that is a different discussion.
as for the origin of albanians in kosovo, like i said, read ANY history of Kosovo written by a non-Serb and a non-Albanian and you will see that there is common consensus that Albanians have always been present in that territory. maybe they haven't been a majority all the time, but that there have been living there is beyond doubt. there is also common agreement by all major historians that Kosovo has been a majority albanian populated province for at least 300 years. but anyway, this has nothing to do with the now, because if apply history to current affairs, Serbia should give up Vojvodina, considering it was never part of Serbia before the fall of the Habsburgs and nor was it a Serb majority populated area barring the last 60 or so years

adriatik

pre 12 godina

Wally-do you know why the electricity was turned off in some serb homes? because of non payment of bills, not because they are serbian. there is water and electricity shortage for the albanians too. funnily enough there are serbs who do take part in the building of kosovo. belgrades influence does not stretch beyond the ibar river. of course this is not to say that all albanian people want the serbs to remain, we have plenty of bigots too, but as i said, it is not administrative policy to root out serb presence in kosovo.
as for you history, let me put it this way, there are divergent ideas as to the origin of the albanian populace. what there is evidence of in kosovo is of a large orthodox presence, but its kinda funny that albanian people were of an orthodox persuasion before the ottoman invasion.

Wally

pre 12 godina

adriatic-believe if you want that Kosovo is the land of milk and honey for those remaining serbs not harrassed or intimidated to leave. Electricity, water turned off on a regular basis, no use of their own language, being denied access to Serbia proper, not to mention no Serb curriculum in schools, churches vandalisesd and needed to be protected by KFOR, etc etc. I am sorry, your vision of Kosovo simply does not exist.
Ok, indigenous can be confusing. let's just say Serbian culture/presence in kosovo predates any Albanian presence, by a long shot. There is little or no evidence of albanian presence in kosovo more than a hundred years old.

adriatik

pre 12 godina

Wally I can only guess that you are very familiar with the term indigenous. the Serb people, who happen to be Slavic only came to Europe in the 6th and 7th century and when they settled in what is now the former yugoslavia. it was already ruled by the romans or the eastern roman empire, so guess what, the serbs are not indigenous people of Kosovo either.
what is a foreign ethnicity? the simple truth is this, any serious historian and by serious i mean non serb and non albanian will tell you that kosovo has been a majority albanian populated area for at least the last 300 years.

adriatik

pre 12 godina

how on earth has kosovo been ethnically cleansed? there are kosovo serbs outside of the north that reside in kosovo proper. whatever you have to feel, it is not the official policy of prishtina to drive out its serb inhabitants. there are major concessions made to the serb community. this is not to say there aren't idiot albanians who want to root out any serb presence, but it's certainly not a gov. policy, unlike say it was under milosevic. it seems to me be, the serb contributors here are a conspiracy minded type who feel the whole world is against the serbs.

Wally

pre 12 godina

adriatic- Yes the majority of Kosovo is now a black hole created by ethnic cleansing, but there is one shining light holding out.

Wally

pre 12 godina

adriatic- the albanians were and never have been the indigenous population of Kosovo. For a foreign ethnicity they received more than equal rights. Yes, the Albanians have a viral birth rate, but that doesn't give them the right to take what isn't and never was theirs.

adriatik

pre 12 godina

what is given everything? tito's yugoslavia and serbia are different things. it was tito that gave kosovo autonomy and serbia that abolished it. it was also only in 1974 that the albanians of kosovo were granted some sort self rule 19 years after the creation of yugoslvia and if you wish to be technical, 56 years from the continuation of the kingdom of serbia/croatia/slovenia. tito and serbia were and are different things. to be a bit more technical, guess what, the albanians were the 3rd largest ethnic group in yugoslavia anyway.

Jeff

pre 12 godina

icj- you really need to get a life. Living off someone elses misery is a sad and lonely existence. Sums you up to a tee.
And Tinka, the albanians were given everything during the days of Yugoslavia. Just of a bunch of troublemaking ingrates.

adriatik

pre 12 godina

what is funny though is that Serbia has recognized Kosovo indirectly. the serbian gov. continues to stress that Kosovo is part of Serbia and yet, it decided to implement a trade ban all those years ago. why would serbia refuse to trade with a province, that according to them, belongs to serbia anyway? only states can impose sanctions against each other, but when a state inflicts a ban on its own territory, then it has pretty much admitted that its not their anyway. whatever serb commentators here feel, the simple truth is this, serbia has lost kosovo, lost it that is in the most basic administrative sense. it does not run the province. what it can do and it is doing is disrupt its development, hence you see parallel structures now. with the north now isolated however, the serbs the other side of the ibar river face a simple choice, integrate and cooperate with Prishtina and the international presence or cling on to some myth that Kosovo will one day return to Serbia. it really isn't going to happen

The Chinese don't give a damm about Serbia, just as the Russians do not. However, if it makes you feel better, dream what you wish. As a matter of fact, the West has donated more to Serbia than the Russians and Chinese together. The only thing the Russians have done is to trick Serbia into selling them Nis for a song.

(Ari Gold, 19 September 2011 20:24)

Russia an emerging power ?! With a population going from 148 million in the '90s to 143 million today and projected to be 110 million in 2050. A quarter of its middle class wants to leave the country:

http://www.economist.com/blogs/newsbook/2011/09/russias-disgruntled-middle-class

That's the picture of a sinking power (if it ever were a power).

Serbia defines a "power" everybody which supports Serbia, regardless of whether it is a power or not. That's why Serbia has lost everything. However, by all means, continue to do the same if that makes you happy :)

Serbs, keep up the protests! Given that northern Kosovo is mostly Serb, it should have the right to remain part of Serbia. There should be no border crossings within Serbia. I suggest that if the situation has not changed in a few days, the Serbs of north Kosovo should peacefully march over the border to Serbia and walk back. Obviously, walk where the wire and fences have not been set up. Show KFOR that their border is irrelevant. KFOR will not shoot civilians, otherwise it would be a media disaster. Record everything. Use non-violent resistance to achieve victory for your cause. KFOR using helicopters to drop propaganda urging you to end the barricades means that your actions are bothering them. They are trying to oppress you. Keep up the good work!

You people live in some sort of fantasy world, but hey who am I to criticize you when the Albanians have lived in a prison called Kosovo for the last 11 going on 12 years.

For you information if Serbia block access to Kosovo your Albo mates are DEAD in the water – how are they going to travel beyond the so called Kosovo borders? What leave Pristina then go to Bulgaria then through Romania then Hungary or is it from Pristina to Albania then swim across to Italy? Or is to Montenegro then through to Croatia then around to Hungary?

Wake up mate and stop dreaming.

(Tinka, 19 September 2011 16:28)

Here we have the completely deluded and misguided Albanian. As if anyone is going to ask your rabble what you want. The west has already had enough of your Muslim brothers and if you think for a moment that they would allow Kosovo to expand or for that matter unite with Albania then you are living in dreamland as they do not want or need an Islamic country in Europe. Have you not wondered why Turkey is not a member of the EU considering it’s had an application long before Poland or the others? Its because they are Muslims mate.

When Washington says jump, Prisitna ask how high Sir?

Let me put it plainly; the US/EU would have used force if they could have but they can’t and now the only question up to now that remained a mystery is answered – protest peacefully and Kosovo remains the same and the west has no answers to that at all.

(The Truth Chicago, 19 September 2011 18:38)

Now that the game is over for the Serbs you might tell us how are things going in that neck of the woods? Has the US government created any new jobs for the hundreds of thousands out of work? Or does Detroit or Chicago still look like a heap of crap outside central business district?

Hey Obama wants to cut government expenditure of 300 billion per year, but meanwhile they will borrow 900 billion per year. Great maths; don’t you agree.

“Does Serbia even have a strategy besides manipulating farmers to pour gravel on roads? This is the Albanian Golden Age! The Albanian spirit has been awakened and they are a force to be reckoned with whether you like it or not. Never again will Albanians be ruled or walked upon by the Serbian nation. You kids are finished.”

This is magic – Albanian Golden Age – I really mean it because it does not get any better than this. The only spirit awakened is bottles of plum brandy and nothing else. But as you seem to see this as a win tell me how is Kosovo going to survive? What industry has opened up in that region? Has Microsoft opened an office in Pristina? Has Ford announced investment to the tune of millions to open a car manufacturing plant? Has Campbell’s made any announcements or has Coca Cola said anything?????

However, industry has opened up in Serbia and continues to do so. The Slovenes and Croats have to deal with the Serbs because they can’t survive otherwise. In fact the Slovene industry has had to relocate to Serbia because it was unviable there. Now think hard and you will see that Belgrade will one way or another control the Albanians whether you like it or not.

The only industry in Kosovo is Thaci and Dell getting rich on contracts paid for by the US government and the rest are getting nowhere fast.

On the issue of “Kosova customs stamps”, you might want to look at the State of Illinois and you will see that it has it own stamps and symbols, but guess who is in charge?

This internet tough guy is acting as if the West is NOT falling and within 10-15 years (max) the geopolitical power will not shift eastward. Let me tell you something, the only way Serbia never gets Kosovo back is if it continues down the path Westward. China, Russia and the other emerging powers will not treat Serbia seriously if once the EU falls Serbia is looking for help from the East. If we change course NOW and forget EU integration and freeze relations who recognize the theft of our country, outlaw all NGO's operating in Serbia..then we will have the upper hand.

You are acting as if the West will be there forever to fight your battles. We saw what happened in July when Albanians by themselves came to Northern Kosovo...shot in the face. This will happen again when the war is simply between the 2 peoples involved.

Until then go ahead, gloat. Act as if the West is really emerging and not a sinking titanic. Act as if the empire is not beginning to crumble, you are allowed this time to celebrate your theft. However it will be game over for you when your are faced with no one to turn to but your superiors, who as you know are the Serbs.

Just as Zoran said, that highway from Kosovo to Albania will come in handy more than you can ever imagine once the West finally succumbs to its own greed :).

OK, finally there is a clear message from Belgrade: We write off Serbs in the South (and Kosovo in general), and try to save/reintegrate the North. Technically, this would be possible and eventually even endorsed by Pristina (for them, the North is a liability anyway), but this would come at a price: in order to officialise it, Belgrade would first need to recognise Pristina and then agree with them on an exchange of territory (Preshevo valley would be the obvious candidate, but then, isn't the Belgrade-Skopje highway going through there...?)
But again, what would be the alternative? An European Transdnistria/South Ossetia? Not sure the EU would approve of that...

What a shame the process of negotiations has failed. I suppose it doesn't come too much of a surprise when dealing with NATO, the world's most advanced killing machine, where ultimatums are the norm. Negotiations that will bring lasting peace to the region are like an alien concept to them. Everywhere NATO goes brings death, destruction and instability to the region.

Well, I'm glad those brave Serbians in KiM are standing up to the criminals within NATO, EULEX and Pristina. This only proves that might is right and that Western backed policy is to ethnically cleans Serbians from regions they have lived in for centuries. Be it Krajina or KiM, the ethnic cleansing of Serbians has been planned and executed.

When the time is right, justice will be served. Albanians know what's coming when geopolitical conditions change. That highway from Pristina to Albania, when complete, will come in very good use.

Negotiations are always the best option but unfortunately those criminals and terrorists dressed in suits from Pristina aren't smart enough to realist it.

Yugoslavia and Serbia were partitioned, why is Kosovo sacrosanct?

adriatik

pre 12 godina

sj - its always the fault of the US isn't it? never serbia or the serbs.

Wally

pre 12 godina

adriatik

pre 12 godina

how on earth has kosovo been ethnically cleansed? there are kosovo serbs outside of the north that reside in kosovo proper. whatever you have to feel, it is not the official policy of prishtina to drive out its serb inhabitants. there are major concessions made to the serb community. this is not to say there aren't idiot albanians who want to root out any serb presence, but it's certainly not a gov. policy, unlike say it was under milosevic. it seems to me be, the serb contributors here are a conspiracy minded type who feel the whole world is against the serbs.

adriatik

Wally I can only guess that you are very familiar with the term indigenous. the Serb people, who happen to be Slavic only came to Europe in the 6th and 7th century and when they settled in what is now the former yugoslavia. it was already ruled by the romans or the eastern roman empire, so guess what, the serbs are not indigenous people of Kosovo either.
what is a foreign ethnicity? the simple truth is this, any serious historian and by serious i mean non serb and non albanian will tell you that kosovo has been a majority albanian populated area for at least the last 300 years.

as for you history, let me put it this way, there are divergent ideas as to the origin of the albanian populace. what there is evidence of in kosovo is of a large orthodox presence, but its kinda funny that albanian people were of an orthodox persuasion before the ottoman invasion.

However, that is a different discussion.
as for the origin of albanians in kosovo, like i said, read ANY history of Kosovo written by a non-Serb and a non-Albanian and you will see that there is common consensus that Albanians have always been present in that territory. maybe they haven't been a majority all the time, but that there have been living there is beyond doubt. there is also common agreement by all major historians that Kosovo has been a majority albanian populated province for at least 300 years. but anyway, this has nothing to do with the now, because if apply history to current affairs, Serbia should give up Vojvodina, considering it was never part of Serbia before the fall of the Habsburgs and nor was it a Serb majority populated area barring the last 60 or so years

adriatik

what is funny though is that Serbia has recognized Kosovo indirectly. the serbian gov. continues to stress that Kosovo is part of Serbia and yet, it decided to implement a trade ban all those years ago. why would serbia refuse to trade with a province, that according to them, belongs to serbia anyway? only states can impose sanctions against each other, but when a state inflicts a ban on its own territory, then it has pretty much admitted that its not their anyway. whatever serb commentators here feel, the simple truth is this, serbia has lost kosovo, lost it that is in the most basic administrative sense. it does not run the province. what it can do and it is doing is disrupt its development, hence you see parallel structures now. with the north now isolated however, the serbs the other side of the ibar river face a simple choice, integrate and cooperate with Prishtina and the international presence or cling on to some myth that Kosovo will one day return to Serbia. it really isn't going to happen

When Russia’s interests align with Serbia’s, it will support it, when not, it will dump it, like it did in 1999 with resolution 1244. The same with US which will support Kosovo as long as their interests align, and then it will dump it.

You ?

When Washington says jump, Prisitna ask how high Sir?

This is magic – Albanian Golden Age – I really mean it because it does not get any better than this. The only spirit awakened is bottles of plum brandy and nothing else.

Not sure the EU would approve of that...

what is funny though is that Serbia has recognized Kosovo indirectly. the serbian gov. continues to stress that Kosovo is part of Serbia and yet, it decided to implement a trade ban all those years ago. why would serbia refuse to trade with a province, that according to them, belongs to serbia anyway? only states can impose sanctions against each other, but when a state inflicts a ban on its own territory, then it has pretty much admitted that its not their anyway. whatever serb commentators here feel, the simple truth is this, serbia has lost kosovo, lost it that is in the most basic administrative sense. it does not run the province. what it can do and it is doing is disrupt its development, hence you see parallel structures now. with the north now isolated however, the serbs the other side of the ibar river face a simple choice, integrate and cooperate with Prishtina and the international presence or cling on to some myth that Kosovo will one day return to Serbia. it really isn't going to happen

Obviously, walk where the wire and fences have not been set up. Show KFOR that their border is irrelevant. KFOR will not shoot civilians, otherwise it would be a media disaster. Record everything.

This notion of an international community is only US interests and nothing else. When Milosevic turned down the US for a base in Serbia that is when your Albos got support and not before. In fact the KLA were considered a terrorist organisation. Look at the Albanian President,, Thaci, a criminal in the true sense of the word, but now a valued US ally – tells you all about democratic processes and due process and rule of law LOL. These days the US is even a laughing stock amongst people living in the first world.

This is an attempt by the west to break this status quo, but nothing will change.

sj - its always the fault of the US isn't it? never serbia or the serbs.

You ?

I live in the first world; haven’t seen any stock being laughed at, be that US, Russian, Chinese, Serbian, or you name it. Who told you that ? Your Malaysian friend again :)

Why should it change ? The West is having a good life with its citizens earning, on average, several time more than the average citizens of paradises like Russia, China, Serbia, Kosovo and the like.
