“In Kosovo it is very easy to get killed”

At New Year 2005 two gay men were badly beaten up and robbed in Pristina. When the police eventually came they were abusive and one of them said “I wish I'd been there to see it. And when they went to the hospital he said “we brought you some faggots”.Recently members of a Wahabi group have been targeting cruising areas. They will place a younger man in situ and if he is approached will come out with sticks and knives. While the response of the police is still sporadic the police in Kosovo have now made lgbt discrimination a disciplinary offense and have set up a separate liaison unit so that if gay people are attacked they do not have to go through the normal police procedures. Since then one police officer has been dismissed and others disciplined. However attacks on gay people continue and few of them make it to court either because people don't want to be outed or through fear of further harassment. Often attacks on gay people are reported as muggings so the number of cases is under reported.

So much for your cheap Kosovo argument. Put two K-Albs in a room with Two Serbs, one on each team is gay and you might find unexpected alliances forming.

There should be room on this world for countries where the mayority of the society is against this sort of public gatherings.

pls say it aint so...,

Your comments are so typical of the liberal classes these days. Becuase im against homosexuals flaunting themselves in the streets doesnt mean im closed minded, I dont see heterosexuals flaunting their sexuality all over the place, and why? because its inappropriate. My opinion is that homosexuality isnt natural and shouldnt be made to be so, both religion and science make this perfectly clear. Being gay is nothing to celebrate.

And Ivan,

Well judging by many of your comments it is clear that you are indeed a Croat, so I need not remind you of how angry people attacked the gay pride parade in Split in June 2011. So your comment about you liking Serbs fighting eachother is stupid, as the same happened in that case with Croats.

-I’m not one of ‘them’ (meaning homosexual, as I obviously need to explain it to you), but judging people based on their sexual preference and ethnicity takes an ignorant person. That’s why you’re having issues with Kosova and with your other neighbors and parades of this kind.

Thank you, PSIAS. it's sad to always have to state and restate the obvious, but we need to, esp.ly here, esp.ly in serbia.

if ppl don't want to be part of the event, stay home, go to the beach, go anywhere! do anything! and let these ppl come together, for one time a yr in public and with (supposed) safety.

it is so damned hard to build democracy and democratic institutions in such conditions.

there need to be non-lgbt supporters to swell the ranks, to offer support and protection. i really don't give a sh-t what kind of sex you do or do not have. this is a human rights issue, pure and simple. and a basic protection of free speech, free assembly. it is absolutely bizarre how it terrifies the homophobes, whereas the ongoing ultra-nationalism and never ending acts of "hooliganism" (is that like "paramilitaries"?) is somehow ok? normal? so sick...

also -- i personally do not not appreciate these comments, like: let's see them (serbs) go at each other! first of all, it's racist -- and just because of the endless racist anti-albanian banter here, that is not justified -- ever.

second -- how do you know the participants will all be serbs? as a matter of fact, there are always outsiders, mainly european human rights advocates and politicians who will join the ranks.

third -- not everyone in serbia is "pure serb." that should go without saying. as if it matters.

we HAVE to move beyond this racist and racialist thinking, which is so powerful, so dangerous, so chokingly omnipresent, sad to say. we have to get beyond it!

ciao! roberto frisco

The majority of citizens of Belgrade may not come out to fight, but one thing is certain that they will not be in the streets cheering the parade on, rather staying indoors so they do not have to witness such a disgrace. (SCP UK, 11 September 2011 15:04)

Yes. If I don't like carnival, I don't go and watch the parades. If I don't like soccer, I don't go to the stadium. But I can see some progress: Last time one of your Serb compatriots here posted that Serbian citizens are forced to watch the parade :)

Pls say it ain't so!!

Disgrace!!!? Are you kidding me?

Who gives you the right to judge others and make such a remark?
If they are going out of their way to promote their sexual preference and their existence, knowing that their lives will be at risk (thanks to the hooligans that you promote), then they need full respect my friend.

They are human and they should get what comes to them. They deserve a free and safe life, and God bless them for having the courage to do what they’re doing, despite the fact that, there are people like you who are so ignorant and close minded.

So you’re right, stay home and keep on blogging
