Roberto, according to you, the only good Serb is the one who speaks against his/her fellow Serbs.
You are so transparent.
Why don't you take you hatred of Serbs and crawl back under that rock you crawled from under.

As far as you brethren, the Albanians are concerned, you champion for the "truth" when negative things are said about Serbs but if anyone says anything against Albanians or Croats you jump up and down and call it propaganda.
You people are truly despicable.

Yaroslav you should be very careful with that type of viewpoint - imagine if the condition of being an MP was not to criticise the state.

That would help those in power immensely and make parliament even further from the people.

I would say that MP's do not criticise their states enough and are too slavish generally, mainly due to party orders.

Trizo you need to understand that the Orthodox Church is a part of the identity of those that take part in its traditions. Many Serbs do not go to church, except for weddings. Besides, your last point proving what organised religion does to people does not do your argument any good.

There is not a great amount of difference between one denomination of organised religion and another. They all want as much influence and followers as possible. I support. Secularism is the way states should be run, accountable to the people.

Yaroslav, if you can't understand the concept that a politician can't be critical of his or her state then you have no understanding of democracy whatsoever.

Trizo,

Don't clutch your pearls too hard there. She's not the only Serb to think "the Serbian Orthodox Church is s***". Serbia would be better off without it. Without free discourse on all topics, society can't function properly.

There should be no sacred cows.

Yaroslav

To Danilo,

I can think of many other critics of Serbia who make such statement and try to act as people of principal. They do not receive state funds.

She on the other hand does.

She can criticize the state all she wants. But if the state is evil and corrupt and she claims to be a woman of principle, I want her to return the thousands she annualy receives from Serbian texpayers.

Do you want to open a discussion about the Vatican and any roles they played during the wars in the past? No, I don't think you do.

The reason religion is allowed to influence politics in Serbia is because a lot of our culture is formed closely with our religion.

We want to preserve our religion and without laws we would eventually see the destruction of our Monasteries like in Kosovo.

It's funny all the Albanians writing how smart she is etc considering that religious extremism is getting stronger in Albania & Kosovo.

The Serbian Orthodox religion in Serbia is part of our identity and for this woman to say something like that is quite disrespectful. Yes she can criticize the state but to publicly tell the world that Serbians should need to become atheist is unfathomable.

Maybe she needs to go back in time and feel what it may have been like to be raped and converted to another religion and then maybe she might have more of an opinion about protecting our history/cultural identity.

“Serbia has no realistic interest in it because its citizens are dying in poverty."

I can invite her joining us to visit my wife's child-time friend. Like we do it all the time, she should however bring some meat with her, so that lady (a teacher!) can afford to cook for her.

Because that's what we are doing. It's not about Serbia, by the way - it is about Hungary, a country with bright E.U. future. If Serbia's citizens are dying in poverty - than not sure, what she would say about Hungary than.

----

This is obsession with theories which is rooted in the Serbian Orthodox Church and that’s why Serbian nationalist ideas are a disease that is difficult to cure,” Pešić explained.

She pointed out that politicians were interested in votes ahead of the elections and that the church, which played a major role in Serbia, was therefore important to them.

“A very retrograde church, such as the Serbian Orthodox Church, dominates in Serbia. It has not said a single new word in 600 years. We have to step up atheism in the society, precisely because the dominant church is so conservative that it won’t let us breathe,” the MP stressed.

A gentle reminder. Szemi will of course strongly object, but an even more retrograde church does dominate Israel. They did not say a single new word since Maccabean ( Maqabim ) uprising against Antiochos IV Epiphanes around 135 B.C. Which was a "traditionalist" (Aramean) versus "enlighted hellenic" conflict. The primitive hillbillies won the day - and that defeat of reason and progress we supposed to "celebrate" as Hanukkah.

And by the way: one of the main reasons of Maccabean uprising was their utter intolerance towards "colorful" way of sexual life.

We have to step up atheism in the society, be politically and sexually modern and correct - and thus FORBID Hanukkah all over the world. Period. ;-)

Now I am not a hedgehog but Zoran's frog to remind everyone: jump if the water is to hot.

An no, I do NOT celebrate Hanukkah. Screw it.

That's right Mrs Pesic religion is so retrograde, so yesterday. Let's embrace western culture and spit on our past. Let's spend twelve hours a day at the office, return home to an empty flat, and get drunk over the weekend. Greed and nihilism are the new gods aren't they Mrs Pesic. It's all about me. And of course we mustn't forget to shove the interests of minority pressure groups down everybody's throat to show how inclusive we all are. Then maybe she should refuse to receive her MP pay cheques and her state pension.

But then again this is the corrupt lady who admitted doing nothing as ambassador to Mexico for 5 years. Well she did receive a large diplomatic paycheque.

If she hates this state so much she should stop being a welfare case. She should syay no to her diplomatic and MP pension and to her MP paycheques.

If this state is so evil and so destructive, why does she want to receive money from it.

But thena gain, she has no morals. She's a former communist functionary bitter that she lost her job so she takes it out on her state.

Vesna Pesic is a remarkable and brave woman. thanks, Vesna. we've read a lot about her, but not here, of course. amazing that we are reading it here(!) at all.

the issues around the church are perhaps the most difficult. it is sad that you have to say "we should all be atheists" just to break the stranglehold of the serbian orthodox church. the things is, the church has the right to exist, to practice, to minister to followers... i respect, or at least try to respect various world religions.

but THIS church is different -- they're not just political, they really have come to define the nationalist struggle. and during the wars of the 90s, do i have to "remind" what their role was? anyone care to remember?

Very brave and honorable words. Religious extremisim is rampant in serbia and the SOC is involved in almost every aspect of Serbian society including politics and business. Separation of church and state does not exist in Serbia. As European nations continue to modernise and develop independent institutions, Serbia retains an almost medieval model of govenment and church.

Why doesn't she go and terminate her existence first, that way she can quickly end up in her nihilistic/atheistic heaven, where there won'be any Serbs to bother.

I think it's amazing how we watch Serbia being isulted and disparaged in such a placid manner. It's as if we see our grave being dug before our own eyes and we're watching it without any emotion.

In a tolerant country like Holland, statements like these, against the interests of their own country, would never be made!

Separation of church and state is key. People can believe whatever they like in their private lives but a goverment should be under no influence of any religious body when it comes to enacting laws, declaring war, etc.
I see no problem with a politician who uses his office to advocate for peace, equality and social justice as a result of a compassionate spirit informed by religious practice in his/her private life, but that is different than formulating official goverment policy on the wishes of the Patriarch. Of course, as with many matters of government, this is much easier said than done. Many voters are religious and add pressure to their elected officials.

Great, it's not just the Muslims trying to take over but now the Atheists.

Why do people feel the need to destroy national & cultural identities of countries?

I wonder how many more 'conditions' will be outlined for Serbia if they are to become 'candidates' of the EU?

Isn't it obvious that we are just running in circles? Chasing our tales?

They do not want Serbia in the EU and if for any reason they actually do want Serbia, it's because they want to rape us of our resources because they are slowly dying & are looking to exploit someone.

When the time is right for THEM they MIGHT let Serbia join... but there is definitely something more sinister behind that.

It is clear that the conditions of entry to the EU vary country to country which isn't right. Diplomats & foreign ministers are always giving 'positive' statements to lead Serbia on but nothing ever eventuates. I remember years and years ago that the EU were making us believe that if we caught Ratko Mladic then we would probably be able to join blah blah.

Serbia is a funny country for an extremist like Mrs. Pesic to make such statements.
In a tolerant country like Holland, statements like these, against the interests of their own country, would never be made!
The Belgrade elite think they are something special and belong in the liberal variant of the German Fourth Reich (EU).

Pls say it ain't so!!!

As for those congratulating her stance I suspect, given they're the usual suspects, that they're only driven by their hatred of everything Serbian and not because they particularly agree with what she has to say.

"We have to step up atheism in the society... "

Do you see how insolent she is?! This woman is surely 'demented', without a doubt. If she hates being a Serb and wants Serbia to be busted, then she ought to start with herself.

“A very retrograde church, such as the Serbian Orthodox Church, dominates in Serbia. It has not said a single new word in 600 years. We have to step up atheism in the society, precisely because the dominant church is so conservative that it won’t let us breathe,” the MP stressed.

LOL she's such a character! She's the one who said in 2008 that elections in Serbia should be nullified if a pro-EU coalition did not come to power, and any future elections should be prevented. What a nice democratic lady :D I wonder if roberto knows about that. Probably not because he can't read Serbo-Croatian :))

I don't know why she even bothers. The majority of Serbs just want to win Kosovo back with all the troubles that come with it. Especially some people who comment here and who will certainly not go to live in Kosovo if Serbia gets it back.

Yaroslav,

I know this may be a somehow a foreign concept to you personally (even though you live in a western democracy), but a politician critisizing the state is perfectly normal, ok?

Danilo

pre 12 godina

Yaroslav, if you can't understand the concept that a politician can't be critical of his or her state then you have no understanding of democracy whatsoever.

Trizo,

Don't clutch your pearls too hard there. She's not the only Serb to think "the Serbian Orthodox Church is s***". Serbia would be better off without it. Without free discourse on all topics, society can't function properly.

There should be no sacred cows.

Many voters are religious and add pressure to their elected officials.

but THIS church is different -- they're not just political, they really have come to define the nationalist struggle. and during the wars of the 90s, do i have to "remind" what their role was? anyone care to remember?

roberto frisco
(roberto, 24 August 2011 18:23)

Screw it.

Absolutely, Agim. That is a golden phrase - and I am sure that phrase will be repeated over and over.
Hope, B92 will be brave enough to publish what I wrote about the "progressive" Maccabeans and "progressive" Hanukah and that I am still missing a single new word from most rabbis, since well over 2000 years.

Thumbs up for the rare exception. But "somehow" this is not an issue in Washington, D.C.
