"Bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will to be rightful must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal law must protect, and to violate would be oppression." — Thomas Jefferson, 1801

"Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual)." — Ayn Rand

"We are so concerned to flatter the majority that we lose sight of how very often it is necessary, in order to preserve freedom for the minority, let alone for the individual, to face that majority down." — William F. Buckley, Jr.

"Constitutions are checks upon the hasty action of the majority. They are the self-imposed restraints of a whole people upon a majority of them to secure sober action and a respect for the rights of the minority." — William Howard Taft

democracy is largely about protecting the rights of minorities, especially unpopular minorities, who are otherwise persecuted, tormented, oppressed, murdered.

(roberto, 20 August 2011 02:38)

It is not.

The maximum you can accuse Serbia is this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyranny_of_the_majority

But unfortunately almost all societies have it.

Kosovo is not even "tyranny of the majority" and certainly not a democracy because of the voting absence and election fraud.

What you expect seem to be a completely different thing - "tyranny of minority". Next time if you dine with Dalai Lama, Obama or Natasha Kandic tell them my best wishes and advise them to act wisely.

Spot on Jim.

It´s not about the "rights" of the sexuals (they have the same rights as we do in public and what the h*ll they want to do in their own bedrooms) It´s about imposing and force something upon us that a democratic majority of us dont want. Eastern Europe is traditionally a united society where traditional family values are strong, hence the western rage against it.

The NGO position is flawed and wrong. If Serbian society overwhelmingly does not wish to have a gay parade then they are within their rights not to have one. If the gay population does not believe this to be true then they should call for a city vote by the citizens (which they never advocate). Hence they turn the argument to principles of democracy however there are many democracies in the world, and even in American democracy you do not have gay parades and marriages etc in many states of America (while in some you do), and this is why their argument is flawed. Serbia has never had any kind of accepted "gay rights" in terms of parades and such so insisting that the country is not democratic as it relates to this mundane issue is an over the top claim and ultimately false. Gays are not singled out in Serbian society anymore than any other type of person, fat, ugly, red star supporter, partizan supporter, DSS party, gay, gypsy etc etc. and to say so is a total fabrication. These NGO's would have a better impact in the world in gaining rights for women who are systematically oppressed in Islamic countries like Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia etc. that have woman obey for every aspect of their lives right down to covering their whole bodies. I mean cmon, who is more in need?? a fiesty gay guy wanting a parade or an abused islamic woman who has no say whatsoever in what she does in life??? really cmon....NGO's stop the propoganda.............

Mladic, Tadic, Jeremic, Nikolic, Milosevic, Iriqi are behind that conspiracy.
Iriqi has my #1 suspect.

Very wicked things can happen in the middle of night in countries close to B92.
You should keep your watchful eye on them.

dear leo ;) you wouldn't know demo-cratic if it bit you in the arse, nor would most people here. it is NOT about voting other people's rights, up or down. maybe in commie/fascist worlds, but not in normal, civilized democratic society. democracy is largely about protecting the rights of minorities, especially unpopular minorities, who are otherwise persecuted, tormented, oppressed, murdered.

It was probably someone who tried to be funny several days ago. No idea, did he succeed or not - or when was it. But don't expect B92 to be your guardian angel, monitor IP addresses and sort out every mocker of Robert Leonard Rope.

Of course you can hire a very democratic I.T. consultant who will coordinate that with B92 on the daily basis. If you can't afford it - stop whining and grow up. On the paper you are old enough already.

The perversion of "gay rights" is generally foisted upon an unwilling nation by the most undemocratic means. In the United States virtually all "gay marriage" legislation is routinely defeated by the voters when given the chance. In the United States, democracy and the refusal to recognize "gay" demands are not simply compatible, they are usually the same. "Gay rights", dopey Roberto, remains an issue for a small deracinated elite. It is absolutely not a "democratic" or peoples' issue and seldom survives the actual practice of voting. Stop trying to impress others that you are "sophisticated" with your childish blather. The pressure from NGOs is not "democratic", boob.
