The muscular attempt to seize control of checkpoints may have gone down well with the public but it has angered EU officials, says The Economist's Tim Judah.

What a load of BS. The EU is only enraged because the plan fell apart. Agreement was reached by Tadic and the EU and each had a part to play in this charade – once KFOR went into action Serbia was to “come to the rescue of the local Serbs” and then announce that the deal was the “best under the circumstance”. Its all part of Tadic’s strategy of recognising Kosovo so that they can become part of the EU (more to the point getting paid). KFOR is now stopping trucks coming from Serbia because they should be paying customs duty to the Albanian thieves in Pristina. Now mind you KFOR would not do this before but all of a sudden they took action.

I can assure you that if Belgrade turned around and said NO DEAL these military barricades would disappear overnight, but its part of an act led by Tadic to ease both the Serbs in north Kosovo into accepting this situation so that his government can get lots of Euros in their personal bank accounts.

This nonsense that “Hashim Thaci, the Kosovo prime minister, came under pressure from nationalists and others at home who argued that he was selling out to Serbia,“ is exactly just that. What has Thaci to bargain with? 1 million mouths to feed? Wow the EU feeds them and they wield power you say? What a load of BS. This is the handiwork of that marvel of the 21 century, the US of idiots.

My advice to the Serbs in Kosovo is stay your course as the american imbeciles are impotent to do anything. To try and use force would be a mistake and even these Washington nutcases are learning this lesson very fast following their disasters in Iraq, Afghanistan and now Libya.

You claim the EU is upset only because the plan fell apart, and then you highlight how such a plan was successful. The plan according to you would be to take control of the border crossings in the north and prohibit the transfer of goods across it. Now with Serbia's BLESSING no commercial goods can cross, and must cross through other checkpoints clearly under Kosovo control. In other words the military shut down the 2 checkpoints to all but personal traffic. Sounds like a win to me. Should the impasse continue Kfor will remain in control of the border indefinitely. While Serbia has ineffectively tried to portray this as agressive acts from the Albanians when the only inuries and casualty was on the Albanian side showing that restraint was used only on the Albainian side, and the only acts of violence being portrayed internationally are by the Serbs.
By blocking a special meeting of the UNSC they were able to prevent Serbia from taking the spotlight and trying to influence the international community with inuendo and half truths and all out falsehoods like happened with the organ trade.
While there has been criticism of Kosovo authorities over the "unilateral" action which could have destabilized the north, they are not claiming that the actions were either illegal nor beyond their mandate.

Be trying to achieve that while holding a part of the population practically hostage, Kosovo is committing a crime that will make you loose international support quicker than you expect. By cutting the Serb off of the goods they rely on, Kosovo has practically besieged them. Such an aggressive action only to achieve political goals is going to chase supporters away from you. It already is doing so. - Crime inc

I disagree with you....just because there are laws for everyone does not mean they are anti-Serbian. Rule of law will spread in that area of Kosovo.

Thanks,

Law and article please that makes it a crime not recognizing another country’s customs stamps if that country does not recognize yours…

No, Kosovo has banned goods with Serbia’s customs stamps the same way that Serbia does with Kosovo’s custom stamps. It has not cut off all goods. Serbs in North Kosovo can use the same goods that the rest of Kosovo uses (the latter don’t live with just air; they get the goods from somewhere else).

That’s great news for Serbia, then. Leave then Kosovo do the above because it’s going to benefit Serbia (even though I'm sure Albanians in Kosovo appreciate the fact that Serbs can't sleep at night at the concern about Kosovo loosing support :) )

Very interesting reading. It suggests Serbian government went against UN (again). It provides a link to the letter from UNMIK to the Serbian government, that basically says: "What are you talking about?". Kosovo products never had "Republic of Kosovo" written over their stamp. So, it is not clear what is the matter with Serbian government.

He is right, Kosovo has nothing to loose in terms of EU integration. It is clear that EU is not caring about Kosovo. It did nothing to Kosovo. 80% of EU assistance dedicated to Kosovo is technical support to institutions. This meant that 80% is given to EU companies and nothing remains to Kosovo just papers copy pasted.

You can not have the cake and eat it too. You can not claim the Northern parts of Kosovo and not take responsibility for the well being of the inhabitants there. This decision is going to haunt you.

Despite writing a book about Serbs and myths that some Serbs interpreted as being anti or overly critical of Serbs Judah has a slightly pro Serbian viewpoint. I should say having read the book that despite the title it wasn't anti Serbian in the way that Serbs would feel about Noel Malcom's book about Kosovo - which I have also read.

For that reason I'm wary of his viewpoint, even if he is one of the more intelligent analysts out there. I'm sure that he does have sources out there though some of whom were not happy with Kosovo Albanian government moves. However, it remains to be seen if this unhappiness is actually located in the coridoors of power itself, rather than among senior implementors closer to ground level.

In the end its the 'higher ups' that decide policy regardless of what mid level people think.
