It is very unusual for a nation to impose import duties on a vehicle (yacht, airplane, car, motorcycle, bicycle, etc...) entering it's territory. Would you expect to pay a 20% tax on the value of your car if a friend drives it to Dubrovnik? What if you ask a staff member to take a company car to pick up something or someone in Dubrovnik? Would you expect to pay 20% of the value of your company car for the privilege? Some people appear to be getting emotionally confused because this is a "yacht" instead of a car.

To my mind, this is the struggle of an individual against tyrannical government -- something which we should all support.

This man seems very imature in his reaction & clearly has a problem with abiding by the law (how did he make his millions???)as do any of the like minded people who share his views. Maybe people should start boycotting his TV networks so that when advertisers & sponsors see his ratings drop - they will boycott him also...Swings & Round-abouts people!!!

I looked up the international convention on temporary import [[link]] [[link]] and it's a bit difficult to understand, but there nonetheless. I would think someone with a yacht would make themselves aware of the international (and EU) laws regarding temporary importation. His lawyers should be advising him on this, remember: pride goeth before the fall.

Very interesting.. Does this applies to all boats that are entering Croatia? That the owner needs to be present? I am thinking of sending my boat to Croatia next summer on vacation (from Austria) but would need to arrange a truck to drive it there before I goes on vacation.
Would I need to pay customs then? The boat is not intended to be sold or anything in Croatia just be there for the summer and then back to Austria.

Does anyone know if there is a risk of being forced to pay customs? I am not Serb and I haven't done anything to Croatia so maybe I won't have any problems?

thanks for you help

well serbs need to stop feeling sorry for them selfs, stop behaving as kids have a cup of concrete and tuffen up. The idea of spending 10mil for a possession of any sort is infantile in its concept, he never intended to use that money on a new hospital or find a cure against cancer, help a child that lost everything in the past wars, no he gave it all away on his precious status symbol. As someone mentioned before anyone who has 10 mil to spare for a yacht should have enough money to look after it. No sympathy whatsoever!!!

To all that complained against my earlier comments following that news story about a Serbs being attacked in Croatia; I rest my case.

Its takes the confiscation of this rich media person's property to come out and tell the truth that many, not all, Croats are Ustashe.

I can tell one thing and as the EU unravels, as it is doing now big time, the Croats are going to be the most isloated peole on this earth. Its only the Vatican and the Germans keeping the facade up on the true nature of Croats.

Croats can be very arbitrary on the laws when in comes to Serbs. They will find some excuse and demand more fines and punishment than for non-Serbs. The Croats also harassed Novak Djokovic's family over a yacht they owned. Croats simply hate Serbs and some foolish Serbs don't realize it - or it doesn't seem to matter - until they directly get that treatment themselves.
That this man was promoting Croatia and covering up incidents against other Serbs until his personal problems shows you why Serbs are having trouble working together and for their own good. Too many Serbs are lacking sympathy for what other Serbs went through - they are not sympathizing with the Serb refugees and the abuses against Serbs in the region.
They need to think of that versus what the "international community" - the same one which lies about Serbia and Serbs all the time - wants them to do.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't there an issue with Kosovo Albanians boycotting Serb products; which in itself is based partially on said KA not wanting to pay duties to Serbia?
Paying duties is like the whole international law argument, you can't have it only when it suits you, it has to be the same for everybody.

“A ban on running Croatian tourism commercials has come in effect and we will never again have an opportunity to cover up incidents and unpleasant situations faced by Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin citizens during their vacations in Croatia,” the release reads.

Well, thanks for admitting something that we all know here - that Serbian based media , as much as they can, are covering up what is really going on in Croatia. All in the name of good relationships between Tadic and Josipovic.

"The initial price is about EUR 3mn, which Mitrović said was “classic robbery of Serbian property“.
If it is, it certainly not the ony robbery of Serbian property in Croatia. But, for the others you don't care much. You cover it up, you don't mention it...When it comes to something that is yours, that's a different story.
There is a great robbery of Serbian property - European Court in Strasbourg rulled returned of all property to Serbs in 2003.
But, I don't know if this is robbery of Serbian property or not.
Here is a story.

"Customs authorities in Croatia have seized a luxury yacht “El Bosko” from Zeljko Mitrovic for alleged customs and tax debt of two million euros, Croatian media reported Owner of TV Pink claims not to have violated the law, and that the authorities in this way put pressure on him!"

They said he did, he said he didn't...

" They state that the owner of Pink made two misdemeanors. The first is that as the majority owner of the yacht “El Bosco” was not present when entering the Croatian territorial waters. Thus, the alleged violation of the law, according to Croatian press."

First misdemeanor - he was not on the yacht as it entered Croatian waters.

He said

" I am not a resident of Croatia, a ship is registered in Gibraltar. The same is the case, for example, with Bernie Ecclestone, but no one thinks of seizure of his yacht!"

Another problem seems to be that he employed Croatian crew!!

"Also, it turns out that the problem is to employ the Croatian crew. This, I guess, thanks … "

Oh so now we're hearing the truth: covering up “incidents and unpleasantness that Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin citizens face during vacations in Croatia”. Such an objective approach; I’m surprised the attack in Split was even reported. But is Mitrovic’s censure in response to these incidents? No, it’s because his precious yacht was seized by Croatian officials. Think twice about this ban, Pink; how are the Serbian people going to live without their regular dose of Thompson.

Mitrović’s 32-meter yacht was bought in 2007 for EUR 10mn and it was seized in Croatian waters in September 2010 due to violation of customs regulation and the international convention on temporary import.

Since the Pink owner did not want to pay EUR 2mn worth of customs duty, the Croatian Customs Administration put the yacht up for sale this week. The initial price is about EUR 3mn, which Mitrović said was a “classic robbery of the Serbian property“.

I suppose I agreed with him until I read this. If you know that you might be breaking the law of any state, regardless of whether you think that law is justifiable or not, you still can't be surprised and shocked when you're punished by your boat being sold when you're not willing to pay a relatively small fine for your troubles. I mean, sure, 2 million euros is a lot of money for me, but for someone who can afford a 10 million euro yacht and is head of one of the largest television networks in the Balkans, it's nothing.

I mean, if my boat was seized by Croatian authorities for something which seems relatively minor (I don't exactly know what he did wrong, precisely), then naturally I'd be a bit upset, but if I could afford to buy it back, then I'd do just that and go along on my merry way. If not, then I'd reconsider the law I broke, see if the actions enacted by the Croatian authorities were illegal in any way, and if so, I'd prosecute legal action. If they haven't, then I'd just have to sucker up the fact that I've lost my boat, and I'll go buy a new BMW or Rolls Royce (since I'd probably be that rich, anyway, if I have a freaking 10-million euro yacht).

This guy's got to know that before you break rules and regulations, you must know them first, so in the chance that you're caught, you can cover the penalty. ;)
