Are we sure that the tourist was attacked because he was Serbian? If yes, I just hope that the attacker will spend a long holiday in jail, where he will have the time to think about what he did. I think that judging or even worse, attacking a person because he was born "in the wrong place" or on a ethnic/religious base, is not only a stupid thing but it is also completely anachronistic. We should learn from History not to repeat the same errors, otherwise we will all end in a huge fight where everybody will attack everybody...... Unfortunately the world is full of stupid people that pretend to judge you according to your nationality, that is why when I travel I usually say that I come from Guyana or Sikkim........:-)

1. Where's the proof that the motive of this assault was ethnicity?
2. Where's the proof that the attacker was in fact Croatian?

There seem to be a lot of assumptions going on here. When the criminal is arrested, we'll know for sure.

Until then - it's a horrible, unprovoked attack on a tourist, period.

All the ethnic hate here is ridiculously unjustified.

''Serbia has numerous ethnic groups living peacefully within her borders.''

I doubt. I want to hear what hungarians, bulgarians, romanians, and especially muslims of sandajk and albanians living in serbia have to say before making any statement, but i don't think they will share the same thoughts with you. Ironic though, serbs seem to blame anyone else for their own problems, bosnians...croats...albanians...montenegrins, it is always their fault, serbs always protected their holy land, and sometime in the past, every one in the balkans used to be a serb, but some became catholics, some muslims, some became turko-greco-latinised in a mixed way (albanians) etc...ever wondered how come all the people in balkans are chauvinistic and racist toward serbs but in turn serbs are so peaceful and civilised? Yet, i don't see croats, slovenians and albanians burn embassies, border posts, court buildings...

"Did anyone think that the serb was a Arkan Tiger first"

He is 32 yrs. old so would only be 12-16 during the Croatian war years. True there were teenage soldiers, but I doubt that young in Arkan's groups. Plus most teenage soldiers were desperate locals who wanted to protect their own homes and families. They wouldn't be leaving school in another country (Serbia) - and their parents wouldn't allow it - to go fight hundreds of miles away in unfamiliar territory.
I mean eventually, if Croats keep attacking Serbs, you will get to Serbs who weren't even born during the war - or who were small children - so what will be the excuse then?

This Serb tourist deserves what he got. How any Serb can go and holiday/spend money in that country boggles the mind. It would be like Jewish tourists visiting Germany in the late 30's.
(Jim, 4 August 2011 06:53)

I absolutely agree with you...Unbelievable that Serbian mentality, giving your cash to thoose who would like to see you dead!

I live in herceg Novi ,which is 10 km from the Croatian border and I have NEVER even crossed the border to that country as if they don`t exist!
Also they, thanks god,are not coming here, what is the point of going there when you have the Serbian sea in Montenegro or Greece which has much more islands and better weather than Croatia?

I hope this incident will pe played 24/7 on all Serbian news channels,it is in our interest to not shovel money into the pockets of our enemies!
Croatia is near bankrupcy and needs the money desperately...

Having read this story I can only reiterate what most posters have already said. Why on earth would any Serb in his right mind want to visit a country like Croatia is beyond me. My experience of Serbs is that they are welcoming people. Serbia has numerous ethnic groups living peacefully within her borders. An awful lot of Croats on the other hand seem to have a very high opinion of themselves. Aggressively nationalist with a sinister religious dimension, and purposely ignorant of their exceedingly nasty history. A pity more people don't visit Serbia. Wonderful pristine countryside. I recommend Soko Banja.

The attack took place in Split, as most anti-Serb attacks take place in. That city is populated by nationalists from Hercegovina. This would not happen in Zagreb or Rijeka. Split is Croatia's Dalmatian armpit.

All that have criticized my comment require an explanation on my part.

This attack is only the tip of the iceberg of what happens to Serbs and or their vehicles in Croatia. However to recreate brotherhood and unity in a united Europe and to attempt to keep Croatia afloat through tourism it’s hushed up.

I can understand isolated incidents as no country is immune from crime, but this happens to Serbs too often for my liking.

Look even Lenard pretends on distancing himself from this crime, but his outbursts at Serbs in RS are amazing to say the least.

Unfortunately Serbs have this mental attitude where everyone is welcome in Serbia and its forgive and forget, but not Croats or Albanians. I have seen Croats in Belgrade enjoying a meal at a resutrarnt with no problem identifying who or where they come from, but there is the difference, these people can walk around without anyone accosting them because of their ethnicity – when was the last time you read about Serbs attacking Croat tourist in Serbia?. I can even go further in claiming that Bosnians are not like Croats or Albanians, but friendly and warm human beings.

As I said before, if Serbs are stupid enough to vacation in Croatia then it their problem because there are many more places I would go than to give a red cent to someone that hates me.

Let me repeat, I understand crime or isolated incidents, but not what is happening in Croatia.

1. Stupid brutality exists everywhere. Some people are told who their enemies are.
2. Tourists should always travel in pairs or larger groups.

The Croatian view used to be that the only good Serb is a dead Serb. However, a good Serb is now considered to be someone who comes to the Dalmatian coast, spends all their little Kunas but knows not to overstay their welcome when the holiday season is over. I guess though, some Croats didn’t get the new memo.

sj,
Since when it is okay to assault someone b.c of ethnicity?
If this happened in Serbia against a Croat, Croatia would be calling Fox News and BBC crying how you are all such victims and required pampering and sympathy.
Croats are welcome in Serbia even though Serbs should not be so welcoming (just my opinion). You find Croatian products in shops, music on the radio, and programs on t.v. This is what is class and dignity and respect. Of course you will never see this in the media since everyone seems hell-bent on continuing to demonize Serbia. Just like this news story. Only thing that gets published in Western media is when it can cast a negative light on Serbs and Serbia. Just like this non-sense in Kosovo. The angle the Western media has taken is that Serbs just decided to burn crossing and create havoc. However, it does not give the full story of Albanian provocation. Reminds me of the Croats....always crying when they don't get their own way and putting a negative spin on events to make themselves look better.
When I visited Novi Sad, there were these Croatians at this restaurant. Even though they were loud, annoying and rude, they were welcomed, served and the waiter was obliging. I wonder if such hospitality would be extended to Serbs visiting Croatia. Judging from this story, and from the senseless comment from sj, doesn't look likely.
Just my thoughts from Canada, for what they are worth, which is probably not much.

You are passing the blame from the attacker to the victim. Thats kind of similar to the Women deserve to be raped if they go out at night school of thought.

Still, it saddens me to think that there are Serbs and Croats that believe that people deserve to be attacked on account of their ethnicity.

The attack took place in Split, as most anti-Serb attacks take place in. That city is populated by nationalists from Hercegovina. This would not happen in Zagreb or Rijeka. Split is Croatia's Dalmatian armpit.
