It's only 4 hours drive from Pristina to the nearest Albanian port through the new highway. Why buy from Serbia?
(miri, 21 July 2011 21:35)

Yes thats what I wonder also, why did you buy from Serbia these last three years? why didn't you buy from Albania before? Can Albania really offer the same goods at the same prices to 1.7 millions people?

Or will new companies run by Thaci, Haradinaj and Ceku control all imports ala Tzar Milo Djukanovic style?

Maybe add nationalism, too, and you named the main sources for all the bad things happening in ex-YU.

Miri its not my personal opinion that things are bad for ordinary people in Kosovo and no better than pre 1999. I am not referring to security or democracy or anything of that nature.

As you know too well, that form of stabilisation / satisfaction doesn't last long. I am referring to what I hear from ordinary Kosovo Albanians and Serbs today. They are not a happy bunch, and as you also know Kos Albanians are no longer 'dining out' on optimism.

The political class in Pristina is worried because they can't make things better so what better than a move like this to give short term satisfaction, but at the medium term cost of even more disatisfaction?

Yes, we all adjust our games to that of our opponent, to 'us' our opponents move started it and we responded. Again its meaningless really. As I pointed out I don't think its done because 'They' started it I think its done because 'We' don't have anything to offer our people because 'We' are incompetent and / or are corrupt. That is the more likely explation for populist moves of this nature.

I won't lecture you on free market economics as I don't like it much myself but the rule of the market is that people will go where they can get the best quality for the cheapest price. If there was an alternative Albanian good from Tirana don't you think Kos Albanians would be buying it already?

And how many new producers in Albania will really open up as a result of this move? Perhaps one subsiduary Thaci Oil company that will sell crisps / biscuits? Don't you believe that a ruling Kosovo political party won't set up one of its ally companies to benefit from this? Hmm increase party statism...

Not that it will be worth much. As I've said illegally transported goods will still be available. I would be very surprised if half of the 400 million usd figure you mentioned was stopped.

The main losers will be Albanians in areas that can't get hold of these illegally transported Serbian goods.

BTW there is one other thing I've already heard from a Serbian businessman who sells to Kosovo. Some already have partner companies in Macedonia, what they will do is to simply ship / relabel production down there to be placed on the Kosovo market.

As they say (yuck) you can't buck the market...

Time for the EU to finally stop the unnecessary and idiotic actions of the socalled 'Pristina government' which don't make any sense and only complicate the situation.

At the same time, goods are entering Kosovo "as before" at the checkpoints of Jarinje and Brnjak near Leposavić, in the Serb-dominated north.

It is a big lie. In Jarinje and Brnjak, not a sigle trailer came by, the minute they herd the news what is going on in Merdare. You can say that; small vehilces as ussual are carrying illegal goods in their trunk, but that is all.

bganon, you might be right (except this sentence "Albanians have seen no change whatever and in fact some have seen the situation worsen, since Serbian forces were forced to withdraw. ")

But this is the game that Serbia plays. What can you do? You have to adjust the game to that of your opponent. In the meanwhile Belgrade budget will also be short 400m$ of exports.

It is, as I stated in a previous comment, mainly that Kosovo Albanians will face life becoming a little more expensive. At the same time the Kosovo budget will become a little bit smaller as a result of reduced tax receipts due to this move.

Serbians (and some Albanians) in the north will continue to receive most of the goods from Serbia, as they will continue through illicit channels, or even as stated in the report through other border crossings. Of course border guards will benefit from bribes etc

What this move has shown in my opinion is the desperation of the political class in Pristina to find a measure that will unify national opinion. They are particularly worried because many Kosovo Albanians have seen no change whatever and in fact some have seen the situation worsen, since Serbian forces were forced to withdraw.

As far as the whooping of some of the Kos Albanian posters here are concerned, to be honest I expected a little more. Its a similar level to any sense of triumph felt in Serbia about amending the constitution to assert Serbian soverignty over Kosovo. In reality nothing changed at all.

Populism is invariably there just to make people feel good, when they have a lot to feel upset about.

Good move by Prishtina. This is a tit for tat- response that will teach Tadic and Jeremic a hurtful lesson they won´t forget.

As for the smuggling from the north: It is of no use because shops in Kosovo aren´t allowed to sell any goods from Serbia any more. If they do they will be punished. This was said today by the Kosovar economics minister.
