Even though EU aid to Serbia last year was 140 times higher than Japan’s, citizens believe Japan helped Serbia the most, daily Politika writes.

What we must not forget is that Japan was Serbia's friend during the time of sanctions and a boody war in Bosnia. Appart from high inflation Serbias infrastructure was falling appart. Lack of spare parts made it impossible to mend old broken down buses and trams. People used to cram into them like sardines. Often buses would carry people as they hang out of doors. Bit like some advanture journey you could see in India or Africa. Japan bought some normality to every day people when no one else did. The level of help or investment is irrelevant. What matters is that Japan was there with a helping hand when EU and US tried to destroy it. How times have changed!

Toni_UK,

You're missing the point. The EU countries caused in material damage much more than they give to Serbia as "donations". Besides buildings and bridges being destroyed there is copious amounts of Uranium in the soil.

The citizens got it right. Japan's aid may be modest in comparison but as it was mentioned, it is the most visible and therefore benefited the citizens the most.

This comment makes a very good point. Most people in Serbia can't see how the funds from the EU are being used. Maybe the money is being distributed to the wrong people in the wrong places, as usual.

The EU aid is to implement programs and things the EU wants which do not benefit Serbia. The EU is interested in shaping the government and systems to make EU meddling easier. They promote themselves and fund groups to be pro-EU with this "aid". They do not create real productive jobs - Serbia's economy does not improve with this type of aid.
The best investor for Serbia is the South Korean company "Yura" which has created the most new jobs. Meanwhile EU countries require a great amount of layoffs before and after they buy a Serbian company.

Serbia doesn't need "aid" with so many strings attached and which mainly train people to cheerlead the EU and implement EU laws.

They're giving aid in order to fund things that they want and like. Japan for example funds practical things that people need. The EU funds thing that the EU needs, in order to better colonize Serbia.

Do as we say, not as we do

On the other hand this German/EU aid in the form of “prepping laws, admin training and institution building” have achieved nothing because most are not even to the benefit of Serbia or its citizens... quite the opposite.

Next to that, the only thing the US funds is an endless amount of websites. You will often see USAID on the bottom of the page.

Absolutely amazing to read this Article and comments.

Well done B92 for bringing to the surface such appalling attitude from both Serbian politicians and ignorance of voters and most amazing and ungrateful comments.

EU, Germany and US that you ungrateful guys seem to hate so much, give over 70% of the aid, nearly a billion EVERY Year! Aid, not loan, credit...but FREE support.

1. Politicians keep quiet about this, there can be no other reason but to keep their voters under the impression that the EXTRA funds are there as a result of good governance. That some politicians can continue stabbing above powers and bite the hand that feeds them as long as above information's is unknown.

2. People need to realise that it is a large amount of money for a poor country like Serbia, but even if more was given like it was the case for decades with Greece, Spain, Portugal...it will NOT help a country like Serbia with the above attitudes. Greece has only 9-10 million people living there, and have managed to collect 350 billion Euros in debts. Serbia can choose to follow on their steps or steps of countries like Belgium, Holland....

Northern Europe and Northern America can not continue this way, drain themselves feeding nations that refuse to change, refuse to join the TRUE democratic and prosperous world. I sincerely hope that attitudes will change on some parts of Europe, otherwise EU and US should reconsider how they use their resources and who they support.

Personally I think Northern Europe and US should reconsider the process of taking on more members to the club, and review the status of some existing members. If the later is legally possible at all. But than there are always ways...

Absolutely, more trams, more trams. If the average Serb citizen needs to see something that effects their everyday life with the EU label on it, then the EU should send trams and buses too.

It´s not so much "underestimation" i think.

They do spill a few € here and there and mostly where it will generate profits for them and their companies, but after have had destroyed all our domestic industries and infrastructure during their aggression against us, i believe most of us sees this as some form of reparation for damage done since they never intended to pay reparations and rebuild the destruction anyway. Therefore, Tadic might, but we wont not be jumping with joy when Brussels tosses us a bone, our dignity and property lost is worth much more than the bankrupt €U can pay.

"As many as 45 percent of questioned citizens believe that Japan was the biggest donor since 2000"

Maybe the EU should send some trams to Belgrade, too, to be more visible :)
