China should get out of Tibet.

It should stop importing ethnic Chinese to bend the ethnic balance of Tibet.

It should stop suppressing the freedom of people to travel and express views.

It should allow the Dali Lama to visit and function without hinderance (politically as well as religiously) within Tibet and within China.

It should allow free votes, and freedom of expression.

Of course, Chinese politics is too weak and too bigoted to do this. It can only function by suppressing its people.

Fortunately, economic and political reality is catching up with China, and the current politics will fail at sometime. People do not like being suppressed - that includes all of the Chinese people who have had to live under a non-representative oligarchal system for far too long.

As an atheist I have no sympathy for the views of the Dali Lama, but in terms of human freedom the situation is illustrative of the necessity for free expression and democratic reform and also illustrative of the need to resist the imperial attitude of Chinese communism.
