"Well, we agree on that. But your point was more than that... You said "West will not allow this" and that's not true because if Serbia and Kosovo agree about something that just concerns them, there is nothing for the West to allow or disallow
(icj1, 12 July 2011 05:41)"

How many times do you expect me to repeat to you what is so patently clear? The West won't allow a political merger because that will contravene the Ahtisaari provisions that the West themselves wanted as the settlement for Kosovo's status. You conveniently forget that there are not just 2 parties (Belgrade and Pristina) in Ahtisaari's case. The West is definitely a very interested 3rd party. And don't forget the West is, as I see it, the one ultimately controlling Kosovo now under Ahtisaari's so called "supervised independence", backed by KFOR, EULEX and the financial and other aids which Kosovo depends on. You do know the meaning of "supervised" right?

Wow why didn’t think of looking up the CIA world book. Gee thanks for letting me know; why I’ll let my work colleagues know about this little hidden treasure. If you look at the US part it shows that it has a $14.66 trillion (2010 est.) economy. Now this is after GFC when the US government had to buy out all the banks and car industry and after the housing market fell through the proverbial floor.

All this when you still have close to 10% unemployment. Here is some advice from someone that works in the fiancé industry – don’t rely on the CIA worldbook for your money advice; you’ll go broke.

Look like Italy is next on the “roll over and go bankrupt” stakes – bet you this is not in the CIA website.

My point was to tell the first poster on this thread that a political union between Pristina and Tirana would be contrary to the Ahtisaari provisions which the West supported. Do you find such a simple thing so difficult to understand?

I don't know what you do for a living or who hired you for it, but it doesn't look like you are good at it. The economic statistics provided were very close to current. Here is the 2010 data and the link from the CIA Fatcbook:

50 Slovenia 28,200
67 Croatia 17,400
102 Serbia 10,900
109 Montenegro 10,100
112 Macedonia 9,700
124 Albania 8,000
135 Kosovo 6,600
177 Moldova 2,500

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/rawdata_2004.txt

Not a bad position for Albania compared to Serbia and other Balkan countries, considering the huge disadvantage Albania had coming out of communism in the early 90's. I'm sure Kosova will be soon on its way as well. We all know we are still way behind the rest of Europe, but I cannot not accept any "our economy is better than yours" comments from a Serb, when it shows you are not doing much better. Settle down and get to work, and stop spreading racist lies and hate on these forums. It is that kind of attitude that keeps you from becoming Europeans. You have a long way to go, just as we do, my fellow Balkanac.

The part where BS begins to smell badly is when you look up these statistics and you see the US has an economy in 2011 still at 14 trillion dollars. Now remember that we have had a GFC and the vast majority of countries have not emerged from that economic catastrophe and that includes the US, but we still have a 14 trillion dollar economy – mind you everyone else has lost out, but not the US or any of it friends.
I work in the industry and see these figures on a daily basis and follow the trends carefully because it is my livelihood. The vast majority of contributors here do use Wikipedia; I don’t because I don’t have to.
I have told you about Slovenia and Croatia so now you keep your eyes open and you will see in a month or two that I am right. The EU propped both up and the cash has run out so it’s a downhill slid in the fast lane for both.
Slovenia did live well in the old Yugo because they would get produce for a pittance from Serbia and other states then process it and sell overseas and they were allowed to keep some of the proceeds and that’s how Slovenia lived well. Look at the same place in about May 2012 and tell me I’m wrong.
Unfortunately all of the information disseminated in the western countries is crap to keep up the spirits – look at how difficult it is the US to admit it’s in a depression; they call it the Great Recession.

Ehm? 1990s? And they are including Kosovo on 103? Sure, sure. Should be easy to find GDP statistics from 2010, Wikipedia is your friend. It won't change the simple fact that Slovenia and Croatia are doing better than Serbia, and that Albania is on the lower end in the European ranking, with only Moldova behind it. It's an open secret that even during the YU times, Slovenia was the most developed part with the highest productivity per capita.

These statistics are so far out of date they are ridiculous. They are from the late 1990s early 2000; well before the GFC brought a lot of this BS crashing down to earth.

These marvellous levels of growth are ALL based on real estate; selling of apartments to foreigners. Today, the vast majority of Montenegro’s population lives on or below the poverty line with real unemployment running at 80%.

Now onto Croatia and Slovenia – both have been told to massively reduce government expenditure. In fact Croatia has been told to devalue the Kuna and reduce the cost of labour to, and get this, the same level as Serbia. Wow from a roster to a feather duster in a decade.

For those are still cant follow what I’m saying – the EU cannot support them any longer so they have to reduce their living standards drastically otherwise no one will invest.

You mean higher growth rates? Correct! They are needed, sure, since Albania in far behind Serbian economy and, as far as I know, is the state with the lowest GDP in whole Europe (Kosovo not included, since it's not a state). Some years with 3-5% growth could bring Albania closer to the European average in 25 years or so.

Strange question that you are asking me ..... not that I'm the least surprised by now. Who approved, in fact I would even say insisted on the Ahtisaari provisions as the basis for "Kosova"? It was the West. And so they would not allow a political union between Pristina and Tirana as that would be contrary to Ahtisaari's terms -- which was my point if you would care to read my post a bit more conscientiously.

Personally I have always thought it wiser for Pristina to tear up the Ahtisaari nonsense and negotiate a partition deal with Serbia. Maybe north Kosovo and Strpce in return for Belgrade's full recognition, the Albanian parts of Presevo and union with Albania. Pristina then would no longer need the West's "protection". Too bad Pristina and Tirana decided to play good-2-shoes to the dictates of the West instead. And so allowed the West to do what I think they always enjoyed doing -- fish in other people's troubled waters.

Why not ? If the parties involved all agree not to follow the Antisaari plan, it is a done deal. Serbia, for it's part, has denounced it. If Kosovo does the same, all parties (Serbia and Kosovo) will be happy that they finally agreed about something (i.e. to reject the Antissari plan) and Kosovo will be free to form a union with Albania.

A truly sovereign state should not require others to keep protecting her (Nato, KFOR) ..... nor require humongous amounts of financial aid from others .... you may see "Kosova" as independent ..... I would certainly beg to differ.

I'm sure the West will be down upon you guys like a ton of bricks in an instant!
