@Nick:

Are you serious that just like that Mladic ought to freed?? It's not a win-win situation all because his victims or alleged victims and their families won't be or feel victorious should he be freed without ever going to trial.

Mladic, murderer that he is, is absolutely right on this. By calling on Serbia to pay for hsi defense, he is rightly blowing the cover of every Serbian government from Milosevic to now, who like to pretend that after the official JNA withdrawl from Bosnia in May 1992, Serbia had nothing to do with the criminal actions of Republika Srpska and the Bosnian Serb Army, who allegedly all thta on their own as part of a "civil war". Crap, says Mladic now, rightly. The BSA was armed, financed, and its officers paid by the Serbian government, its entire strategy was coordinated with the Serbian government and army, plus loads of Serbian paramilitaries were sent by Serbian state agencies to kill in Bosnia alongside their BSA allies etc. Maldic is right: the war was a massive intervention by Serbia, with its massive armed forces (many of who merely changed their uniforms in May 1992) into the independent state of Bosnia. As Mladic said last week, don't blame only him, blame Serbia for electing Milosevic. Doesn't absolve him of his particularly bloodthirsty way of carrying out Belgrade policy, but Belgrade policy it was.

If the radical Serbs from Bosnia and Serbia have paid when he was on the run, for 15 years, they should keep on doing up! Have of the Serbia population is with Mladic.

I agree Serbia should pay for his defense. While his alleged actions were incomprehensible and totally morally reprehensible, he was acting as an agent of Serbia with blessing from its leader of the time.
His guilt or innocence will be a reflection on Serbia. Although, Serbians portray that the turning over to the Hague somehow cleanses them from any association of guilt that is not true. An acknowledgement of guilt by the Serbian govt and restitution to the victims families is the only way to wipe the slate clean.

Nop. Mladic was a General of Republika Srpska, not of Serbia, Serbia boycotted Srpska from 94 onwards, and it was thanks to Milosevic that peace was brought to Bosnia. It really has nothing to do with Serbia but rather with Srpska. Secondly, The crimes of the Serbs (In Both the Krajina, Srpska and Serbia) come nothing near the Million killed in Iraq from 91-Present, shouldnt everyone who took part in that pay for it?

RS government had already set up a fund for his defence, good on them and Serbia should do the same.

The man in my opinion is not guilty of the henous crimes they have accused him of, because of his actions many Serbs were prevented from being slaughtered, WWII showed us how Croats and Muslims act in times of war so the Serbs had to be ready for a possible repeat, but General Mladic defended them and the Serbs as a people owe him this at the very least. Personally the man saved my family's village in August 1991, if it were not for him many relatives of mine would have been slaughtered. I wish I could do more, but at the very least I would donte.

Also to all those Westerners, Croats, Muslims, Albanians or even Serbs who dont care about their people, you can downgrade this comment all you like, I really dont care because it makes no difference to the fact that Mladic is indeed a hero of his people.

Set up a fund for Mladic. So all the nationalist who consider this criminal a hero can donate some of THEIR money, Serbia as a state has surely better use for money than for this war criminal. In case Mladic cannot afford a lawyer, the Hague will supply him with one, just like it is the case in all courts for defendants who cannot afford to pay an own layer.
(Analyst, 18 June 2011 16:18)

Well said . I agree totally. I fund should be set up and all those foolish fantasists can actually contribute with their own money. I feel when these puppets actually have to do something themselves , as opposed to calling for everyone else to rise and 'defend serbdom' while they have no intention of leaving the comforts of the west or giving all their money to someone they admire , then Mladic and the rest of the world will find yout who actually support him and by how much.

Lets see our very own internet warriors (see below) sell everything they own , give it all to their heroes & move to Serbia and then volunteer to help their "knight" because they admire him and love him so much. Lets see and laugh when these wannabes disappear line whisps of smoke when they are asked to actually do something they say they believe in.

No doubt if their actions continue as history has so far shown , Mladic will find himself broke and without any friends. As is just for such a vile human being.

Why not send money to support Mladic.
It is only fair considering other regional neighbours have done the same?
Considering that the tribunal is being funded primarily by US/West I guess they are paying the prosecutors again only fair.
If we all believe alot of the misleading and undetermined information relating to Srebrenica masacare then having a properly funded defense team may be of advantage.
