Minister: Arrest could cost us election victory

Serbia's ruling parties are aware that Mladić’s arrest is not a popular move that would likely lose them the next election, Labor Minister Rasim Ljajić says.

"As far as I know, Tadic was elected in 2008."

Bu he was also elected back in 2004 before that. In 2012 will be the end of his second term and I believe he cannot run anymore - like the U.S. presidents can have only maximum 2 terms.
And under his government the standards of living have deteriorated - unemployment has gone up; production down - and the country has taken on a lot of debt.
Employment was actually better under Milosevic and food and utilities were very cheap.
Milosevic warned people of how Serbia would be sold off if the DOS took over and that's exactly what happened.

Who the heck cares that 51 percent of citizens in Serbia opposed Mladic's extradition. The vast majority of these people ought to realize that their wishes may be dashed. If anything I hope Mladic's arrest brings some peace of mind to his victims including the 6,000 or 7,000 Bosnian families that may still reside in the state of Minnesota and possibly were directly or indirectly affected by the Sbrenica massacre.

Of course, Tadic may decide to cancell the elections-this is very possible because at his core there are no real democratic principals, but rather, the principals of Titoism. Tadic is just another milosevic in disguise.

"Tadic is a person from the past, he has chosen to be a servant to foreign interests, and that is the least thing Serbia needs at the moment. thanks god, he will only stay in power for something about a year... the next elections will be a clear answer, I guess. let´s just hope he won´t cause any further damage, like a secretly agreed division of southern serbian territory. that would be real high treason."

Yes, and Sesjl, Kostunica are the persons from the future. Ridiculous. But well, that's the good thing in a democracy: The government can change - after the termn ends, and not when some opposition party demands it, though. Maybe the Serbs really needs a government formed by the Radicals. With some more isolation and deterioration of the living conditions, until they finally realize that Radicals and similar groups cannot offer any solution for the future. And if, by some magic miracle, the Radicals would really be able to improve the situation in Serbia, that would be fine, too.
But ask yourself: What did Kostunica achieve during his term? I think Tadic achieved more.

As far as I know, Tadic was elected in 2008. So his regular term of service will end in 2013. And that's the time for new presidental elections. The parliament was elected in 2008, too. It's the opposition, headed by DSS and Radicals, that constantly insist on turning down democratic principles by demanding 'early elections'.

first of all, this is simply nonsense. although Mr. Ljajic makes a quite serious impression on me, it couldn´t be farer from reality what he is saying. according to polls, the current serbian government is lost, and ...it was already lost before they arrested Mr.Mladic.

so, to put the blame now on the alleged international duty, the arrest of Ratko Mladic, is more than dishonest. it is simply stupid.

as for dedonker yari: please, my dear, learn english. I speak french and german too, and even I could hardly understand what you wanted to say. it resembles german grammar what you have written. could that be? well if so, english grammar is not that far away from german, but anyway you should try to learn some more of it.

as for Danilo: what is your comment about? aren´t you also only writing from the sideline? or would you call yourself someone who is right in the middle? would that make yourself a better observer???

Moral purpose will win more votes in the longer term than standing by war-criminals.

The Serbian people do not want to be associated with those crimes.

There is a responsibility for what happened that people don't want to be associated with and therefore automatically deny. The Hague is there to bring home to people that these wrongs were done.

The right-wing parties are failures - their heros are criminals with a murderous past. They are discovered, and revealed, and they are now marginalised. They will fester - but I doubt that Serbia will vote to fester along with them too.

Wow , it seems like most of my countrymen are totally deprived of the meaning of capitalism.

For you, comment giver, it will never be better. Why? Well you are poor (better to say not rich) and our new system is ruthless to your kind (and mine unfortunately).

We are discussing the extradition on Gen. Mladic while nobody gives any ideas how to better our country. This government is filled with people who have no idea how to govern but that is not my main concern , who will come instead of them. I will vote for the first one who gives me a valid idea what to do with our country.

You can find me on facebook if you wish to discuss this subject and if you wish to know what I think should be done.

I would like to add just one more thing-beware those that call themselves the "opposition". Unfortunatly, people like Nikolic are in fact just one side of the same made in the USA coin. Nikolic promises the Serbs hope and change. Three years ago a snake oil saleman from Chicago promised hope and change to the yankees!

It is very dishonest to state that the opposition will lose because of the Mladic arrest-the opposition will be swept out of power because of its corruption and its deception of the Serb people. Tadic will be thrown out because he serves foreign interests and not the interests of Serbia. The Mladic arrest is just the needle that broke the camels back.

I cant wait for the election-we are organizing large voter blocks in all nations with large serbian ex-pat populations. Mladic may have handcuffs on his hands but so will many of Mr Tadics cronies when a proper government is installed and is willing to investigate the corrupt institutions propped up by tadic and his clan.

Of course, Tadic may decide to cancell the elections-this is very possible because at his core there are no real democratic principals, but rather, the principals of Titoism. Tadic is just another milosevic in disguise. If he cancels or postpones the elections there will be a massive uprising - either way Tadic is finished as the leader of Serbia. I would recomend to him that he return to his ancestral home in Montenegroe and take a long vacation-he surely can afford it.

Let's wait until the elections next year. Many things will happen until then. I guess a lot of people will realize that there are more important things for the future of Serbia (and their personal future life) than to discuss the arrest of an alleged war criminal.

Make a poll: 'Do you want to pay no taxes on fuel?', and the majority will cheer 'yes'

Not only will it be an historic and humiliating defeat, it will be so massive that it will not be even worth calling the leftovers opposition worthy. There will and cannot be mercy for traitors whose behavior is to be lackeys of Serbia's enemies and whose policies are against the core interests of The Republic of Serbia. The people will speak and the current Belgrade elite will hear, feel and remember it.
