Carney said the U.S. saw the council as a "credible and legitimate interlocutor" for the Libyan people and opposition to the Libyan leader, but added that Washington believed it was too early for any formal U.S. recognition of the council.

The rebels council which claim to represent the 600000 residents of Bengazi are not a "credible and legitimate interlocutor" for the Libyan people by any stretch of the imagination as Carney suggests. The basic remit in any aspiring democracy is the will of the majority.

The Libyan adventure is turning into a massive cock-up. The West thought that they would walk over Gaddafi and his army, but it seems Gaddafi has had time to adjust his tactics to western bombing. In addition he started exerting pressure on Nato countries by using the refugees weapon.Thousands have been send to Europe and thousands more are on their way.

Gaddaffi still has significant Libyan support, and the Arab league doesn't seem to want to know any longer. It will take a huge number of troops and resources to dislodge Gaddafi which no western country is prepared to commit at the moment.
