Court accepts folk singer's settlement with prosecution

The Belgrade District Court today accepted a settlement reached between folk singer Svetlana Ražnatovic, her sister, and the District Prosecutor's Office.

This is a political verdict that is supposed to make the government look as if it is cracking down on corruption. At the same time the government doesn't potentially lose hundreds of votes (from Ceca 'supporters').

At the same time Ceca is happy because it means that this issue has been put to bed for once and for all.

The two victims:
Justice - any ordinary citizen guilty of the same offences would be forced into prison for a few years
Serbian citizens - even if Ceca was not given jail time the citizens of Serbia deserved that Ceca pay more into government coffers at a time when money is very hard to come by. In the end the value of what she is 'returning' is much smaller than the amount she defrauded.

The message is therefore - doing the crime is worth the fine!
