Ha ha ha! You call those famous? Perhaps Johan Belushi and his brother but the others I never ever heard of. Besides, they were born and raised in America. If they would have lived in Albanian they would be goathearders. And the rest of your list. Do those people really exist? Or are they made up just like the illyrian, so called, culture? Are they famous and known outside Albania? I doubt that? You can compare serb and albanian acheivements all you want but you will loose in the end and you know it.

Serbia:
Waterpolo champions
Red Star champions leauge winners
Basketball European and world champions SEVERAL TIMES
Tennis world champions
Djokovic grand slam winner
Anna Ivanovic grand slam winner Paris

So, Mr. Mike C, I can go on and on with this list. Whats important is that you didnt do your research before you level such rediculous accusations because you just make yourself look silly. I think having a former astronaut, nobel peace prize winner, co-winner of a nobel prize, a founder of a different country (Egypt),winner of the inaugural Man Booker International Prize, winner of a YobiFilm Awards grand prize
winner of the inaugural Man Booker International Prize,
an amazing hockey player respected by every hockey fan, world champions in Kickboxing/martial arts, famous actors and actresses in American film, famous photographers, and worlds best restaurant etc is a respectable list. I guess there will always be people with tape over their ears and tape over their eyes. Oh, I cannot forget to add my favorite Albanian....Adem Jeshari!

@Another Canadian Serb

Your comparison is silly regarding the oath and church and state. Serbia cannot be compared to other countries because the only countries that allow the church to be as involved in politics is the likes of Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other extremist countries. In the USa there is seperation of Church and State. Heres a little history lesson for you about Serbia's love fest with Orthodoxy.

Since the foundation of the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1219 by Saint Sava, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian state have had close relations. Unlike the Catholic Church, the churches of the East have a history of subservience to the state; in fact, one of the salient features of the Orthodox Church is its subservience to state and nation, and provides moral support to internal oppression and external aggressiveness, Saint Sava makes this point clear: he was “…the youngest son of the founder of the Nemanja dynasty, and brother of the first Serbian king”. Turkish rule in Serbia did not end the politicization of the Serbian Orthodox Church; rather, it simply changed its nature. Since the Serbian state ceased to exist, it served the Ottoman state under the millet system. The Serbian Orthodox Church was a “…cultural and quasi-political institution, which embodied and expressed the ethos of the Serbian people to such a degree that nationality and religion fused into a distinctive ‘Serbian faith’”. It became the main carrier of Serbian national identity. Since the Serbian nation was no longer linked with a Serbian state, its link with the national religion became still more pronounced. The myth of the Heavenly Serbia was a manifestation of the radical union of nation and church.This fusion of church, state, and nation is known as Saint-Savaism (Svetosavlje), and was established by Saint Sava himself in the early thirteenth century. A Serbian theologian defined Saint-Savaism as “…‘Orthodoxy ennobled by a healthy Serbian nationalism’”. This is also the most potent and dangerous source of intolerance and occidentophobia in Serbian society.

He has done a significant amount of charity work for both the people and the churches. On the other hand he lives in a tax shelter, Monte Carlo, which means none of his income tax goes to Serbia. With his high amount of earnings, if he lived in Serbia and paid taxes, I'd bet more money would go to Serbia than what he's given to charity.

I agree with Chicago Truth, I've lived in many places around the world, and the high level of extremism that is going on in this country is ridiculous. I thought church is about worshiping Jesus and God not about trying to appeal to a bunch of old dudes in funny dresses.

Either way, religion is the root of all evil - here in Serbia its the root of all nationalistic ideas and politics it seems too.

No idea why the tennis player, being as great he is got an award from the church, he should get one from the president after all, he is the leader of this country and not the 'pope' of serbia.

You know you dont have your priorities straight when the church of your country issues the "highest honor, accolade" for a tennis player no matter how good he is. they even boasted about how rare it is for someone to receive that honor. Get real. A country of 7+ million has nobody else thats done anything extraordinary other than a tennis player? No scientists? authors? doctors? researchers etc dont deserve such honors? This is nothing more than a publicity stunt for the Orthodox Church. Lets latch on to any success in the country then spin it as a success of ones "faith" in the "orthodox church". these clowns are no less nutty then muslim extremists, christian extremists, jewish extremists etc. Nemanja made a funny comment that I completely agree with "Serbia is becoming Orthodox Iran". I'll take it one step further...it "isnt" becoming but "is" Orthodox Iran.
