As time goes by I can see less difference between the current politics and that of the pre war when total impotence encoraged Adolf Hitler. The started with no fly zone and came to deliberate bombing the only legal head of a state. Just like the Sudette crisis and later occupation of the hole country or like the Danzig corridor crisis and later occupation of the whole country ect. ect. ect. Heil Sarkozy !

Killing Gadaffi would be a massive blow to the Pro-Gaddafi forces, however this would just enthrone one of his sons. To have a lasting effect, the majority of Gaddafi's clan need to be eliminated. This way pro-Gaddafi forces would have no command and morale would fall, giving anti-Gaddafi forces a good opportunity to push west.

However I expect if Gaddafi and/ or members of his clan were killed in a bombing, pro-Gaddafi media would deny it; intentionally causing confusion.

There is nothing like a war to distract the populace from the economic problems. There is a lot of truth to this statement and the US badly needs a distraction to the economic horrors just around the corner. The question is how long can the US afford to prosecute this war before the whole economy crashes around their heads?

The main aim of the West's intervention in Libya was to get rid of Gaddafi but they had to dress this up as "humanitarian" in order to get the UN resolution. That resolution is so vague it could mean whatever you want it to. With un unstated aim and a vague UN resolution, mission creep was inevitable.

The West started with the "no-flight zone" thus depriving Gaddafi of his air power, then it was decided to send military advisers-just bear in mind that the American involvement in Vietnam started with the putting in of advisers-and at the same time British & French troops are conducting exercises in Cyprus. These activities point to ground troop involvement in the very near future.

I think time is the essence for the west because of the costs involved in prosecuting this war.Gaddaffi still draws significant support from the tribes aligned to him and it will be very difficult to dislodge his forces who have had time to adjust their tactics to western bombing. This is probably why Nato planes and US drone predators have been employed to attack Gaddafi's compound thinking his elimination will pave the way for a swift resolution to the conflict.
