The schools are in horrible condition, the health system is pathetic. The police and legal systems are a joke. These institutions will not be changed by Serbia itself, it needs the EU.

I would like to see a better future for Serbia's people and their children. S*** you nationalists, who are putting the benefits of this outlaw state in your pockets. No politician is completely honest, but at least we may or may not vote for him. The EU is the only option.

Serbia should side with Russia and China, and end up becoming nothing?

You must be kidding. Last time I checked Russia and China were doing very well. So well in fact, that China owns most of America. The EU is economically moribund, just look at Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Spain.

Given that the vast majority of his countryman disagree with his assessment, he just reduced the poll of people he can get votes from. Seems like a recipe for loosing election. Not good politics on his part.In this scenario, he should be very ambiguous and wishy-washy.
I don't see how he/his party wins this time around unless he stalls on holding election another year, hoping things will change by then.

Here is something to consider to all those aspiring EU candidates:
EU is not a get rich quick scheme! Why don't you try to eliminate corruption, grow the economy and just straight up build a country the old fashion way: yourself! Hey, it's been done before.

EU can certainly have it's benefits, but don't ignore the drawback. For a starter, you will loose your ability to affect financial policies. Notice how ECB raised the Interested rates during a time when Portugal, Greece and Ireland are already bankrupt and having to sell their bonds at 10% interest rate. The ECB just made their life harder! And the bailout they got is not free money-it's a debt their next generation will struggle to pay.Don't expect Greece, Ireland and Portugal to be able to behave like real countries anytime soon. There is no such thing as a free lunch!

"...Kosovo's independence, Tadić said that such an option was not possible." There would be no option to Serbia joining the EU without recognising Kosovo independence first, 100 percent security. The talks will not last until Serbia join the EU so Serbia can have an excuse that "we are talking to Kosovo".

Precisely Mladen! Why does he keep talking about this? Serbia's destiny is with Russia and China and other despotic regimes. Serbia's never known how to be anything other than a pariah state.

The EU is for countries with shared values like democracy, stability, security and freedom. Serbia doesnt share those values. First, the political culture of Serbia leaves much to be desired. Serbia is for the most part a free and democratic country. But senior figures in the parties that govern them - as in some other central European states - appear to lack democratic (as opposed to demagogic) instincts. The purging of civil servants who do not toe the party line, the installation of unqualified party loyalists in key state agencies and companies, and the withdrawal of funding from independent-minded NGOs, all suggest that ministers do not always appreciate the value of a pluralistic civil society. On the top of that, much of Serbia suffers from inadequate criminal justice and severe corruption. However, the governance of Serbia is more likely to improve if they are inside the European Union - and subject to its rules - than outside. This is why I prefer them to be with Russia and China....Serbia will never amount to anything by siding with the East:)

And europeans values are more social: Serbians are more suspicious of the state, of trade unions, of taxation and of equality. European values are also more secular and liberal: some though not all Serbians have a different take on issues such as the death penalty, gun control, abortion and embryo research and religion. And finally, Europeans tend to support the idea of a rules-based system of global governance, and strong international institutions. Many right-wing Serbians do not want any constraint on their freedom to act the way they want, when they want.

All in all, this is why Serbia should not join the EU. Also, by not being in the EU it will only slow down Serbias developement and worldwide image abroad which is a good thing:)

Who says 75% of the British want out of the EU. That figure is highly suspect. The UK to be trueful always wanted an economic co-operative area not a political one. But we live in a small world and we are all interconnected economically now. When ever there is a strike in France it affects the economy in the SE corner of England. All political parties now that to pull out of Europe now would be suicide for the ecomony as a whole. Come on in Serbia test the water. Don't think by stopping out you can ignore it. Even Switzerland can't avoid whats going on around it.
