"Serbia must resolve restitution issue"

Deputy PM Božidar Đelić said on Thursday that Serbia had to resolve the restitution issue if its goal was to become a candidate for EU membership.

I don't understand the restitution case at all. The people the communists confiscated property from had stolen it themselves. Under the Ottoman Empire, all property belonged to the Sultan, regardless of how he chose to allocate it at any particular moment. Nobody apart from the Church can claim property rights dating back to the free Serbia of the 15th Century, so all the communists were doing was evicting squatters on land that belonged to all of the Serbian people, not just a few individuals.

So what are you waiting for? How many times are we going to hear the same thing again: this month, next month, next year… Stop delaying and do something! "Problems"? There are problems, yes. Corrupted functionaries sold to the tycoons what should (and could) have been already returned, and what now? Some new law that says "What's sold stays sold"? Do we have to go to Strassbourg?
