I remember when my family and I were being forced out of Kosovo by Serb troops, we spent 48 hours at the Kosovo/Macedonia border. Leaving there I had a feeling that things would be different at this place down the road. It’s great to see that justice has prevailed and this border is now manned by Albanian police instead of the war criminals of the past. I wonder long it will take for this to become the Albania/Macedonia border when Kosovo gets absorbed into Albania. If it only took just shy of 12 years for the border to be solely in Kosovo Albanian hands I would think in another 12 years or so we should be there.

During the negotiations that started in 2006, there were three premises that the two sides (Kosovo and Serbia) had to work with. There was no returning to pre-1999 status, no change of borders, and no merging of countries (Kosovo and Albania). How fast do you think the international community would recognize Albania and Kosovo as one country when both countries would be ignoring the requirements that were put forth? No one would recognize the merger. The international community didn't tolerate the Albanians in Macedonia when they tried to break from Macedonia and they didn't tolerate the Albanians in Serbia when they tried the same. And do you really believe that the EU would accept Albania into the EU with Kosovo as a part of Albania considering it would be Albania and Kosovo ignoring the EU. If you think mergers are that simple, consider Moldavia and Romania. Same people and same language but still two separate countries because the international community won't allow the merger. Kosovo is required to be a tolerant multi-ethnic society, which already isn't happening, and surely wouldn't happen with a merger with Albania. Keep dreaming but quit talking. It's not going to happen.

You should also note that the article says that the ABL with Serbia is still under KFOR control. Unless Serbia recognizes Kosovo, which won't happen in this lifetime, I don't think that will ever change. Kosovo can't even send KPS to the border without KFOR protection because the KPS is afraid.

Don't understand why this would make a difference. Most everything smuggled to/from Kosovo is across the Kosovo/Serbian border but it is seen as a Kosovo isssue and not a Serbian one.

Well, Kosova kept its part of the bargain, the other side didn't (neither Serbia nor the intl community.)
The fact that Kosova and Serbia are again at the discussion table, means that whatever premises that were in 2006 are out of the window. The union with Albania, is very much in agenda and more popular than ever.

The Albanian guards at the border will all be living in mansions and driving Porsches by the end of the year.The heroin will pour in,human trafficing,weapons smuggling,white slavery all increase tenfold.Great news for European drug users and for johns visiting prostitutes cause the prices will go down due to the tenfold increase of supply.Lucky dogs those privileged few who get these kinds of cozy jobs.

Both ALbanians of Albania and Kosovo want nothing more as well, merging would be stupid, well for albanians it might be allright, but in case ALbania and Kosovo merged, not only serbia, but montenegro, fyrom and greece would feel threatened, and suddenly we would have more and more tensions in the region, bosnia too would be destabilised...when albanians talk with albanians in coffee shops always reach this kind of conclusion, looking ''big'' on the map is just stupid, with the common currency, free movement, protection of civil rights and close coperations of policies, finance, trade etc, borders are merely formal, just like in EU, in EU a german is free to live in france and work in Belgium without being worried of visas extent, residential permit, taxation etc.. but when we talk in forums we say '' the league of prizren is not over'' '' ethnic albania'' Actually, EU integration of the entire region would solve all the problems, in Fyrom albanians are impatient because slavs in fyrom are the reason the country is not being integrated in NATO and EU wbecause of the name issue, Albanians, who could care less about the name, blame slavs for the problems, slavs one the other side are busy with settling their identityi because , in balkans, if you don't have a 2000 year old name and identity, you are not a true balkanic nation, and consequently both albanians, and slavofyromians in fyromland are becoming more and more nationalistic, which is a typical balkan tragic comedy which usually either starts up with armed conflicts or ends up in armed conflicts, who cares who was who 2000 years ago, anyway...

In 2001,in order to make italy shut their mouth around EU meetings, Albanian gov burned motorboats regardles wether they were illegal or not , still, smugling, into italy continued through montenegro, tunisia , former yugoslavia, etc...during 90s itaians blamed Albanians, and they were right,now in the 2000s and 2010s that we practically and officially set a corfue over our seas, and now that we have modern patrol boats, nothing is coming out and in...still , it seems that italy is unable to control its own waters, now emmigrants, even use greece as a bridge to italy...blaming albanians for smugling is merely propaganda to cover powerful domestic maphia and its ties with italian gov, at least in the italian case...considering the Albanian success to solve the traffic problem through waters, it highy probable that NATO asks us to cover Montenegro...

Prejudice? What was the name of the 'country' where a border police officer committed suicide because his senior chief told him to turn a blind eye on smuggling? Where the PM is a former chief of a certified (by several foreign intelligence agencies) drug smuggling gang? Not a hard question to find out :-)

If you are happy with the current circumstance in kosovo, I suggest you go to Pristina and tell everyone to smile b/c the people there are definitly not as optimistic as you.

The only way forward is with Serbia. This is reality. It will take time to sink in, unfortunatly in the mean time the people will fight for a fake/lost cause.
