This "Serbia should be/is a bridge between east and west" that Serbs love repeating to each other, is a bit ridiculous.

Nobody needs Serbia to be a bridge anywhere.

I fully agree with Winston and Charli. Change happens when the youth organize, it is vital. As a lifetime Chicago resident, I saw it happen to elect Obama. We must turn towards the West, but also maximize relations with the East....we must not fool ourselves, we will never be regarded as fully Western like Slovenia; we are a bridge due to our geography and history. We must reform the judiciary, along with commercial law, and arrest Mladic. But we must never recognize UDI of Kosovo; it is our heritage. I assure you: America would never allow one kilometer of its territory to separate. Let Kosovo have substantial autonomy as Hong Kong does.

I agree with Winston.

Additionally, I do not see Serbia getting EU candidacy status this year for three reasons: general economic mess (Greece, etc.), Mladic, and Kosovo. If two of those factors changes dramatically, then perhaps....

But time will move on regardless. My broad recommendations to young furture leaders, and those who can think in a fresh fashion:

1. ONLY peaceful protests
2. Think of specific ideas and solutions and promote them--in every category: education, economic development, the environment, improved regional relations, better democratic policies, etc. It is not enough to compliain. You must have better ideas.
3. You must have solidarity!
4. Show you are serious with a "Clean UP Belgrade" Campaign. Pick up trash, paint, plant flowers. A lot of this is very cheap. Organize yourselves in neighborhood teams. This can be a strong metaphor for cleaning up the government! Spring is coming: An overall rebirth.
5. Utiize FB and Twitter and cafes and Youtube. If a critical mass has the will, the word can go out quite fast. Most young people are greatly underemployed. Use this time for what you want and envision your country 10 years from now.
6. Keep pushing for early elections. This group hasn"t changed anything, except the chairs they are sitting in.
7. Take your vote and representation VERY seriously. All decomcracies get the represetation they deserve.

I wish you good luck!

Nikolic, do everyone a favor and get lost - and take Ilic with you. I am in favor of big changes within the current EU leaning government, but Nikoloic is not not the man to do this. Serbia needs some young blood, that is nationalistic at its core, yet smart and capable enough to play a middle ground between the west and east, for its own benefit.
