Unfortunately I may have not made my point clear enough. It had nothing to do with victory or loss in either Kosovo or Vietnam. My point was to show that although government representatives say the right things, policy changes can happen overnight.
The US stated that they would never desert their allies in South Vietnam and they did because it was expedient. The same applies to Kosovo. Look at Obama, he promised to the people who elect him that he would close Gittmo Bay and to pull out US troops from Iraq – he has done neither. Not that anyone expected this to happen anyway, but this is another example of saying one thing and doing something else.
In 1999 the west was top dog, but this is 2011 and that is not the same situation i.e. China is on the cusp of taking over as the world’s largest economy and we have a re-emerging Russia plus Brazil and India. The US and its allies are bogged down in two wars and looking for a third venture as if the other two failures are not enough; their debts are mind boggling and their economies are in ruins.
Kosovo hangs by a thread. In 2011 it is only US pride that will not admit its mistake and that’s all, but if you see it otherwise I’d be pleased to read about Kosovo’s value to the west other than having a base there.

This guy is lying big time. You insist on that there will be no talks. US and EU have said clearly that status of Kosovo is a done deal.

Gentlemen,
I have an extract of one of the last speeches made by the US Ambassador to South Vietnam in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City).
“The United States of America will stand shoulder to shoulder with its most important ally and friend in the South East region and we will continue to do so and against all odds. We are friends with the free peoples of South Vietnam who are only seeking to protect themselves and their democratic institutions against the tyranny of Communism. We will not abandon them at any cost.”
Two weeks later the Ambassador was in an Iroquois helicopter on his way to an aircraft carrier off shore of Vietnam in international waters. 30 minutes later the North Vietnamese Army was rolling through the gates of the Presidential Palace.
Get the message?

sj,

I remember after Serbia surrendered in 1999, Milosevic came on TV and said (with a straight face) " Dear citizens, the war is over and Serbia has won". Meanwhile, the average Serb scratched his head and said to himself: " Wow, what a smart guy Slobo is, I was sure that Serbia lost the war, but now I know that we have won". How easy it is to win, one only needs to know how to view reality!

I don't think you understand Serbian politics. He has to say status is being discussed. Like they have said they will not recognize Kosovo's unilateral independence. So the game plan is like with Eulex, Serbia opposed it but they were being pressured to accept it so in the end they made it seem like they invited Eulex against the Albanian's will and everyone in Serbia was happy.
1244 stips Serbia from all control and possession of Kosovo (a very humiliating fact) how do they turn that. They find a phrase that refers to Yugoslavian territorial integrity, they twist andmold it to make the Serbs believe it guarantees that Kosovo will forever be part of Serbia. Now hundreds of thousands if not millions of Serbians celebrate 1244.
Now how do they tackle status and get where they need to be. They must someway force a separation of Kosovo and Serbia against the Albanian's will, like they are actually throwing them in the streets. It must be portrayed that the Albanians actually wanted to rejoin Serbia but they refused to cuddle them any longer.
That is Serbian politics 101.

This is such a nonsense. "We are ready for dialogue but our position will never change".

What the heck you want to talk about when your position is already made?
