If you were Serbian, you would know the feeling!

Touche :-)
Very eloquent response, more clearer than your initial post. I agree wholeheartedly with this comment. Time and distance thru the airwaves can confuse at times, especially when you wish to be brief. Perceptions can be decieving!
My service career was Navy, not army, (why walk when you sail), still spent enough time under canvas though :-)

Wee Kelpie, I think you may be somewhat argumentative. Everything you said goes without saying, that soldiers should not be fodder etc. Funny that you would take my initial comment which merely voiced respect for the armed forces, into a debate about expendibility. Second, Serbian military history goes much further back than the last 15 years, and fortunately Serbia has always been on the right moral cause. Lastly, there is always the risk of dying as a soldier. the Serbian youth that are enlisting now recognize this, and I salute them for it, hat in hand! No need to be "bemused" at all. Just because you've served (for who knows what army), doesn't give you the right to be patronizing. The fact remains that Serbs still love both their individual soldiers as well as the military establishment and tradition which goes back millenia. If you were Serbian, you would know the feeling!

"I was raised to respect those who are in the military and to recognize their sacrifices as the highest that can be given. Whether I am in the military or not should not stop you from honoring the brave men and women who make up the Serbian armed forces. Your post reeks of cynicism.

I'm with Wee kelpie regarding your original post although I'm not bemused, just fearful. I was raised to have my own mind. And dying for a wrong war or being blind in nationalism is not something I respect. I am not talking about Serbia per se.

The bravery I respect is not a soldier just because they are a soldier, bravery is standing up for what you believe in. Of course sometimes soldiers have that.

Are you American?

Statements made like the above belong to the last century, to mass conscript armies.
VS is going in the right direction, all volunteer professional army. However, 'potentially dying' for ones country is a privilige in the hands of people who view the military as their own 'box of soldiers'. Theres a huge difference between 'sacrificing' and 'being sacrificed', (The latter being the case when you consider the past Incumbents of Belgrade politics)
Incidentally, I served 16 years man and boy, am fully aware of the ultimate sacrifice and do not like to see the word banded about so loosely

Their is no more Yugoslav Republics for Serbia to rip off and steal from like they stoled the equipment in the 1990s that all paid for. Anyways the equipment they stoled youngest is now 25 to 30 years old most 40 to 50 years old.
(Lenard, 14 February 2011 05:58)

Utter nonsense!
Still bashing serbs/serbia, how about bashing yourself?! Privately of course

The fate of a nation always goes in tandem with its youth.... . There is no greater sacrifice for a nation than potentially dying for it.... Serbian patriotism is alive and well!

The defence budget of Serbia 80% goes to wages 15% for bases ,food ,electricity ,heating and equipment maintenance the 3% fore fuel maybe if lucky 2% for modernization. "The chief of the general staff added that the army’s position in society was better and that the proof of that was the fact that young people were very interested in enrolling in military academies."

The fate of a nation always goes in tandem with its youth. Serbia has always had a proud military-centric culture and this is defiantly an encouraging sign. There is no greater sacrifice for a nation than potentially dying for it. Serbian patriotism is alive and well!

Agim Kelmendi

Miletić, however, stressed that the VS was lagging behind in terms of modernization due to financial reasons.

If you stop waisting 500 mil a year for funding couple hunderd Serb thugs in northern Mitro, I am sure you can afford to modernize and have professional army in region.
