As for most of the Serbs currently in Kosovo being left behind in such a swap - well, I'm not sure they were ever the main concern of the Serbian government. Politicians have seemed much more concerned with not having been seen as the ones who "lost Kosovo." Give them a face-saving way out, and they might take it. Just let them call No. Mitrovica "Kosovo" so they can claim "We saved Kosovo!" (Kosovo can disappear into couple of Albanian counties - Dardania, Moesia, whatever). With all the energy saved, the Balkans will become the next economic tiger.
(Amer, 21 January 2011 15:37)

Amer,

Your suggestion is a non-starter. Remember, there are many more Albanians in Serbia than there are Serbs in Kosova. The only way the Albanians will agree to parting with Northern Mitrovica is if the K-Albanians retain the Trepca mines AND if East Kosova (Presheva valley) joins Kosova proper. By the way, most Albanians, no matter where they are from, have little interest in having Kosova join Albania.

KU - getting both Serbia and Kosovo into EU would of course be a better solution, but at the rate the process is going, even for Serbia, you have to wonder whether either side will have the patience.

Ataman - yes, everybody's worrying about the stability of borders elsewhere in the Balkans, but if the Albanians remaining in Serbia and Macedonia are guaranteed the rights that the Serbs are guaranteed in Kosovo (or the new, enlarged Albania) they might be willing to agree to the deal. Especially if the entire area can foresee entering the EU sometime in this millenium.

Won't work well because of numerous Serbian enclaves in south. And how about displaced persons.

And how about Macedonia? You give the nationalists your finger, they want your arm and leg. No sooner will be happiness and society improving than when Albanian nationalism will be dead. How many times did we hear: "Albanians have only one religion: Albanism". What is the solution for that unholy "religion"?

yes yes, I like exercises in imagination. So, instead of fighting over Kosovo, Serbs and Albanians could actually try to get together to convince the international community that that would be an acceptable solution. Serbs would get the north, Kosovo gets to join with Albania. Now, why would Serbia accept to do that? What would it get? Only the north? Would that be enough? it depends on how high are their hopes to dominate whole Kosovo again. There is a corner in the back of their head, where that hope is still there, I think. Well for some that hope is in a corner, for others it occupies the whole head. so we cannot tell if the north is enough or not enough. Let's assume for the sake of argument though that it is :). Now, what would it take to make that work, apart from the obviously very difficult, almost impossible, coordination between Serbs and Albanians? EU and USA are scared of Bosnian instabilities. And they are the ones that rule in this part of the world, Serbia included. So it would take also Bosnian Serbs to be quiet and not raise fears of instability in Bosnia among the Western policy-makers. Would they be able to do that? What would they get out of it? It would take Albanians in Macedonia and Presevo to be quiet too and not raise the same fears of instability in Macedonia. Aaaahh too many variables to control, it takes a lot of coordination and trust between "enemies" and a lot of self-control, and not sure the other side would want it either.
In the mean time, there are other more doable projects that would bring unification under a bigger organization of both Kosovo with Albania and North Kosovo with Serbia, EU that is :).

How can people say just give Serbia Northern Kosmet and let the Albanians have the south?? More serbs live in the south than in the north and 95% percent of Serbian religious and historical sites are located in the south. It would never be fair. Gracanica, Decani, Pec Patriarchate, Devic, Our Lady of Ljevis, Gazimestan, Gorazdevac, Gorioc, and Budisavci are all located south. Serbia will never give up its sovereignty over all of Kosovo, ever. If there is to ever be a partition , which is possible, I believe it will be similar to gerrymandering where the borders wont be in a straight line but while be all over the place in order for the serbian religious ad historical sites to remain within serbia.

No thanks. That's for the Dick Marty and the numerous lies and sabotage Serbia has done since Slobodan was chased out. And Kosova will one day join Albania.

Serbia is now caged, when in 2005 could've have easily asked to join EU by making a deal regarding Kosova.

Nice try, no changing of the border Serbs. Now that EP screwed you, all of the sudden you remembered Djindic? A division will mean that the southern Serbs might leave for the North since Ahtisaari Plan would be gone and of course we want Kosova multi-ethnic or whatever it's called.

This is not news, it is a fact well known. Kosovo partition was offered by Djindic to the West and the idea had more support that it has now. Looks like Tadic is preparing the terrain to come forward publicly with the same proposal. Privately the waters are already tested.

Take this with a grain of salt. And given who is saying it, take with a huge one.

Everyone who talks of Djindjic's and continue his way is lying. Its the case with Ceda, with Tadic and especially with this man.

The simple fact is this man, if aything, is America's man. Remember when he was PM, he wated Serbia to join the American occuation of Iraq (he had machinations of Serbia committig more trrops then Poland and Georgia).

Going further. This man has an interest in potecting himself. When he was PM he was 100% psychophantic to the west, something noone can accuse Djindjic of being (remember after the west failure to fulfill pomises, Djindjic was within 1year of Slobo's fall at times hostile to the west -- the famous Bild interview for example).

To conclude, don't believe this man. Here are two of his greatest hits of lies he has said: "I will create a million jobs in 5 years" and "If I had been premier ten more days the EU wouldn't of imposed the ICTY co-operation."

He went on to say that DOS at the time received an offer from the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) - which joined the opposition after the fall of its founder and leader Slobodan Milošević in 2000 - to secure a parliamentary quorum for the ruling coalition "in exchange for a monthly fee of EUR 50,000".

In hindsight this doesn't come as a surprise. I wonder how much they were paid to form the current government? The sell-outs same cheap considering the West paid about €7 million to form it.
