The Jasmine Revolution has a good chance of succeeding - the population is educated and Western in outlook, meaning there's not much worry about a single election installing a permanent Islamic government. And the army is dealing with the elements in the police loyal to Ben Ali, maybe the most important factor. People power is great only if the government loses control of the tanks.

With the floods in Australia, a substantial amount of the world's food supply is being lost, meaning the prices they were rioting over in Tunisia are only going up. The question will be how loyal to their regimes the other armies in North Africa are, I fear.

Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi announced he will name a new government on Monday in a bid to fill the political vacuum. And on the streets people expressed their hopes of a secure future.

Unfortunately revolutions have a lousy habit of doing the opposite of what they are supposed to be doing. That is leaving the levers of power in the hands of the oppressors.

The West which fully supported the brutal murdering torturing kleptocracy that has oppressed the Tunitians for years were pretty fast in lending their support to the new regime which is exactly the old one with new clothes.By doing so they could probably contain the revolution from spreading to other autocratic regimes in the Arab world.

Tunitians must make sure the new goverment is not another Western puppet. The rule of democracy must be re-established for the benefit of all Tunitians.Ruled by corrupt unelected leaders, a job for life, can only lead to a culture of nepotism and poverty.
