I enjoyed reading this article and it filled me with hope that a peaceful colution can be found to the current crisis. Then I clicked to comment on the article and I read Predrag's vicious comment and I lost all hope.

For every person with a message of peace there are 10 that wish only for violence. No wonder I don't hold much hope for peace in the Balkans.

"He also stressed that the upcoming negotiations should primarily focus on the people."

Serb cult leaders care nothing for the "people" in kosovo in so far as they can be used to further their nationalists agenda.

Errr, talks with whom?
Terrorists and Organ traffickers who falsify election results?
These albanians have killed thousands of Serbian civilians and forced over 250.000 to leave their homes?
Yeah, im sure these monsters cant wait for Serbs to return!

And return to what?
To UN refugee camps??
To barbed wire ghettos and 24hr military protection???
Burnt down churches that still havent been rebuilt and desecrated graves?

Sounds like multicultural heaven!

Church men are too often quoted. Religion has played too much of a negative role in the world and deserves to be questioned. It is full of conflicting views and full of people whose single-faith convictions are a sneer on others who think differently.

It is not just Orthodox Serbs who should be able to return to Kosovo. All those who were driven out (lots before Milosevic) should be able to return - even the atheists and protestants amongst them!

In Kosovo, the church is being used as a symbol to maintain a historic identity over the land This symbolism is being treated as being more important the matter of actual faith in a living God. The commandment 'thou shalt not kill' has been ignored so frequently that it is clear that true respect for God has not existed. I am truly confused about how nationalists can defend murderers but keep the church as a symbol at the same time.

That said, the churches should be rebuilt. I don't believe in God, but I do value tradition. There is 'heart', both good and bad, in the histories of the Balkans. Tradition should maintain that which is good, but people should write plays and stories about that which is bad - as a reminder to those who come about the wrongs and pains of history that should be avoided for the future.

So, do build churches - but as a mark of tradition and of the positives of history and culture (and faith if you really do believe in those things). But do not build or rebuild religious buildings as a means of occupation. Mosques and churches should not be treated as if they are like an animal scenting its territory.

Wow, not often that I agree with Orthodox bishops (or their equivalents in other creeds for that matter), but here's one speaking loads more sense than even most of the liberal secular establishment in Belgrade, not to mention those on the lunar right that one may normally expect archbishops to be allied to. Keep it up father.
