You know the 72 number began to bother me too until someone here criticized the fact that most of the countries recognizing Kosovo had not recognized Palastine.
Then after a quick check I found that only 106 countries recognize Palastine as an independent state since 1988. 106 in 22 years makes 72 in 2 sound pretty good.
Plus only 136 countries have recognized Montenegro in 4 years and there is no controversy surrounding their declaration.
(a New Day, 3 January 2011 20:14)

Interesting idea. Now if this were true, you'd expect the list recognising Montenegro to be the same as the list recognising Kosovo, only with some extra names. Strangely enough, however, this isn't the case. For a start, none of Kiribati, Tuvalu, Palau, Micronesia and the various other specks in the Pacific which help puff up the Kosovo recognitions have yet recognised Montenegro! Could this be because no one has been bothered to bribe/threaten them on Podgorica's behalf, I wonder.

Proof of the spurious nature of Kosovo's independence if ever I saw it - you can play Spot the Difference here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_relations_of_Montenegro and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_recognition_of_Kosovo.

Oh, I didn't know that so many countries recognized Palestine. I though this isn't a state at all. About Montenegro: The independence came after a mutual agreement, and it's a UN member country, so there's no doubt about the statehood.

Rexhepi, as many others from Kosovo still believe that the world and Serbia owe them and they refuse to make any compromise. That is about to change.
The best of north that Kosovo can get is institutionalizing the status quo with in the Kosovo Rule of Law but as independent entity if not partition at this point.
Any alternative that is not acceptable by Serbia would push self isolation of Kosovo because Serbia is in control of all in and outs routs for Kosovo people, goods and services. That means that5 Kosovo economy is in the hands of Servbia, you like it or not.
Kosovo leaders have to be brave to tell that to the people of Kosovo and that to teach them how to low their guard.

No, they are still there! But they are a bit hard to recognize after they have been re-decorated by the peace-loving and totally non-extremistic supporters of Vetëvendosje ;-)

You are right all the UNMIK-P vehicle have re-decorated and are bearing Kosova plates, since they were sold as whole sale and people were buying like 50 to 100 vehilces a shot. Have you heard of car auction? UNMIK sold all its assets by way of auction.

You see, you do need agreement before you declare any independence.

72 country's did not care for agreement, more to come we have all the time ahead.

That's because Serbia isn't challenging it.

Apparently you miss the entire point.
That leaves somewhere in the neighborhood some 60 countries almost 1/3 of the UN which have not acted on recognition of Montenegro eventhough there is not political debate. It would be safe to say that most of those same countries have not considered the Kosovo issue either as they are probably more focused on internatl issues.
136 in over 4 years for a noncontroversial declaration and 106 in 22 years for a controversial one, makes 72 in 2 a bit more impressive.
You do need agreement to declare independence but that agreement does not have to be with Serbia to have a functional independence. Kosovo is functionally independent of Serbia as it stands. There is no need to ever go backwards. Anything unobtainable at this point would also be unobtainable with any type of reintegration with Serbia

The south of Serbia is predominantly populated by Albanians, who recognize neither the authority of the Serbian government in Belgrade, nor the fact that only 72 out of 192 UN member states recognized the declaration of indepednence made nearly three years ago.

Current Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says that Kosovo will not be on the agenda of the Belgrade-Pristina talks.

He told local newspapers that "the problem of Kosovo cannot be solved in one year and, especially not by an UDI, and that it requires a long-term approach".

"I will insist that Kosovo not be a subject of talks. It is Serbia's internal affair and cannot be solved with local politician Pristina who maniulated elections" Dacic believes.
