Interestingly, Serbia is in a better position - the nationalists there have been are so useless that the country has learned much and moved on quite substantially.
(Bob, 29 December 2010 22:52)

This is very true. Serbia's equivalent of these subhumans celebrating Pavelic (and Serbia has FAR fewer of them) are pointless, marginalised individuals with neither power nor influence. For all the professional Serb-haters will continue to bleat about "war criminals thronging the streets of Belgrade" and similar rubbish, these toxic elements have become totally irrelevant in today's Serbia (let's leave the internet warriors of the diaspora out of it). Itr's a shame the same can't be said of Croatia, "Kosova", etc.

I strongly suggest you stop reading those business sections. It has the same “experts” that gave the AAA+ rating for the toxic loans in the US. Even your financial people don’t read that stuff nor do they believe the information released by the US government, but do their own research.
I know the bench mark being peddled by the west is the IMF; meaning if you need its assistance you’re a third world country. Let me enlighten you on this subject. The IMF has China on its board of directors because they were the only country that had the money to fill the empty coffers of the IMF after “it had to spend to keep western economies a float”. So please spare me the BS about the IMF.
For your further edification the IMF has been to Zagreb several times unannounced by the local media and Croatia was TOLD, not asked, by the EU to cut its spending because there is no money to give to Croatia. Didn’t they print the fact that the Croatia has IMF loans? Well they I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but they have.
Perhaps I have given you too much credit , but I have never heard of any country living off tourism alone. Then there is the strategy of increasing VAT and cutting salaries – the US will not do the same for fear of its economy going further downhill but it will work with the Croat economy. On the tourism side, even the Croats have said that it’s down 30% down on last year and in fact it’s down in all of Europe. The Croat tourism minister was on HTV and he said that they had to reduce their prices to attract more visitors because they were too expensive and had to compete with surrounding countries.
For the thousandth time let me try and get this information across, Serbia was under sanctions for 20 years; Croatia and Slovenia were not. In fact Croatia was helped by the EU to bring its economy up to pre-war standard soon after hostilities stopped but Serbia was made to languish to teach it a lesson about freedom and democracy. Even Slovenia’s economy has not progressed any further considering it never suffered sanctions or war.
“laid-off workers are being bribed not to cause trouble” isn’t that what you guys use when the US auto workers where made redundant? Or is this just a Serbian “thing”?
My two friends at the World Bank told me that Croatia was classified a basket case back in January 2010 and that it would become technically broke by “the end of 2010” and they were spot on with that prediction.
I said to them give me a warts and all answer about Serbia. They did just that and what you have said “agriculture is the only part of the economy that exports more than it imports” is correct. On the aspect of investment, they said that in the long run if they are careful with the type of investment they allow in they will benefit greatly – much like China has done and Russia is doing right now.
On the issue of a Kosovo being sustainable, they said “what does Kosovo have? Nothing so if the EU stops giving aid; its dead as the Dodo bird”. The only way to stop Kosovo from exploding “is to allow the Albanians to seek work in Serbia”. Thse are the words of their words.

What form of mental sickness spawns respect for murderers like Pavelic or Mladic?

Sick.

I don't have any conviction that Croatia is right with it's past - the EU needs to deal with that further.

Interestingly, Serbia is in a better position - the nationalists there have been are so useless that the country has learned much and moved on quite substantially.

Croatia can now kiss their chances of joining the EU good bye.
(sj, 29 December 2010 10:35)

I hope so!!!

Not in my interest probably - privately I probably would benefit (cheap car registration + no homologation fees for American cars).
But in interest of Croatians: stay away from EU.

No amount of prayer will help Ante Pavelic to get out of hell. Personally I was never a fanboy of Catholic Church anyway - but no doubt it beats all mullahs and all nutcase Baptists of the Bible Belt.

If it's about converting Hagia Sophia back to Pravoslavy - I am 100% behind that. But to keep the balance - the LaLa Mustafa has to convert back to be a Catholic cathedral. Mullahs and bollahs can take of to Saudi Arabia and don't return please.

Pavelic and Francetic will not be saved by all of the prayers of all Catholic Croatian believers because they are already burning in hell for what they did. The priests Lasic and Kos are on their way. There is no purgatory "holding pattern" in the afterlife...never mentioned in the Bible. It is a pipedream and last chance mechanism to trick Catholics into believing that they can be saved after they die invented by a corrupt church that has a history of supporting fascists, Nazis, assorted genocidal acts, brutal colonialism, dictators, etc. I am sure all of that looks good in God's eyes...

The Catholic Church hierarchy did know about and cover up and protect the sexual abuse of boys by Catholic priests and monks for many decades. It probably goes back hundreds of years, I'll bet.

Homosexuals/pedophiles go into the priesthood to escape the pressure to marry and because they know they will be with other men and have power over the young boys.

"Serbia can very easily live well outside the EU, but Croatia does not make enough money so the EU has to supplement its budget each year. It either join or sink. "

Somebody isn't reading the business section - it's Serbia where the government is borrowing to fund basic operations, not Croatia. In fact, the IMF wanted Croatia to take out loans, but instead they cut salaries and increased VAT, which may make things tougher now, but will mean less debt to repay once the recession (finally) ends. Last year tourism in Croatia was up because people were nervous about going to Greece - and that helped to balance the budget, but they aren't counting on the same good luck this year, which shows there are realists in control of the situation. In Serbia, on the other hand, where agriculture is the only part of the economy that exports more than it imports, investment is being strangled, the census (needed for rational planning) is being postponed, laid-off workers are being bribed not to cause trouble, and every financial move the government makes has to be approved by the IMF.

sj, I don't think so. The EU turns a blind eye to these types of events. Croatians regularly glorify their NAZI past while Estonia has an annual SS march. Check http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/outrage-as-ss-men-hold-anniversary-celebration-in-estonia-552327.html

The trend is changing and fascism is gathering popularity again. I've watched documentaries recently sympathising with NAZIism, one attempting to paint Russia as the enemy. Check http://www.channel4.com/programmes/world-war-ii-the-untold-stories/episode-guide/series-1/episode-2

Serbia will never join and that’s a known fact because the Russians don’t want it to happen that way. Serbia can very easily live well outside the EU, but Croatia does not make enough money so the EU has to supplement its budget each year. It either join or sink.
According to the world bank Croatia is technically broke. Why do you think the EU wants the former states of Yugo to trade as in the past? Serbia does not need Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia or Montenegro, but they need Serbia badly.

truthiness, 29 December 2010 13:48)
Any church that harbors pedophiles on the scale as with the Catholic Church is a FAILED organization. Yes you can have a person slips the net, but not in their thousands. Perhaps you might ask one of your Catholic faithful that has suffered from a pedophile how they feel about this issue.
Yes Russia and China are on the rise in this world and I’d rather side with them than with losers like the US and their allies the Croats and Albanians.
You should have a good look at your Croatians and their desires about Yugoslavia – they would have it back tomorrow just like the Albanians, but it’s the Serbs don’t want any part with this idea. Several polls in Croatia have shown that they would if they could return to the old days. Factories in Croatia are closing on a scale that makes the Great Depression look like a kid’s game and the only daily coverage on HTV is who stole what and how much and which politician was involved.
Who cares what the Albanians want in Kosovo. Ask the question what are they going to live off? Spain needing EU help and street riots happening in most major EU centres over living standards and Kosovo needs money to survive. What do you think the upcoming discussions are about?

This is actually against the current trend among mainstream Croatia. It is a failed attempt by a failed church discredited with pedophilia scandals to get the attention of the dwindling aging pro-Ustase element whose few new young recruits are becoming atheistic. sj, I don't think so. The EU turns a blind eye to these types of events. Croatians regularly glorify their NAZI past while Estonia has an annual SS march. Check http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/outrage-as-ss-men-hold-anniversary-celebration-in-estonia-552327.html

The trend is changing and fascism is gathering popularity again. I've watched documentaries recently sympathising with NAZIism, one attempting to paint Russia as the enemy. Check http://www.channel4.com/programmes/world-war-ii-the-untold-stories/episode-guide/series-1/episode-2

Croatia is at home within the EU.
