The US cannot change its mind on Kosovo - it is fully entrenched. However, it should be pressured for that mistake. It will stand by Thaci as long as it can, but it will dump him as soon as necessary.
While we are on the subject of war crimes - has the US answered about the Iraq fiasco? Should George Bush be tried given that it is now seems clear that he and Blair went into Iraq knowing that there were no weapons of mass destruction? History has shown that their emphasis was certainly wrong and it was quite likely a politically motivated deceit - a war crime. How embarrassing for the US...…. and look how easily it has been covered over and quietly ignored as an issue.
The concept of heads of state going to court was well illustrated by Milosevic (and I am sure that he did deserve to face his accusers). That establishes that the idea is fully workable. Milosevic provides an example that should be followed more often!
The US shields itself from international law, while imposing it on others. You will not get Bush into court even if there is case that should be answered. However, the level of protection that Thaci will get is much lower. The US would throw him to the wolves if it suited them. This statement about Kosovo is a reiteration of their intransigence over the status of Kosovo, but it is also the beginnings of them distancing themselves from Thaci. That said, if they do throw him to the wolves it will be an incredibly great embarrassment for them.
However, the US should not be allowed to shield those of its citizens who knew that these organ murders were taking place. They must open up evidence. I understand that there are US citizens who warned Albanians to stop the murders - a reasonable order to give. However, if those same US citizens were complicit in hiding those crimes and protecting the murders, they should receive no protection from their US status. They should face court.
The main conclusion I have drawn is (unfortunately) that the US should never be trusted when they talk of 'humanitarian intervention'. The reality in Kosovo is that the US is preserving the results of an invasion and a victory over Serbia. The US took sides because of an (understandable) dislike of Milosevic, but chose not to take account of the fact that Albanians had been ethnically cleansing Serbs long before Milosevic.
We can now add the thought that the US knowingly gave protection people who were guilty of a terrible humanitarian crime - murder for body parts. Disgusting. It would be nice to at least hear an admission from the US that they did have to pinch their noses in order to pursue their Kosovo policy.
